    After Franklin D. Roosevelt's 4-year term as president, people realized he had broken Washington's "rule" that a president should only serve 2 terms. There was no actual rule that a president couldn't serve longer, so they decided to pass an amendment to change that.

    The 22nd Amendment was ratified on February 27, 1951. With alabama being the last state to sign off on it.

    Harry Truman was the president when the amendment was ratified, but he was exempt from it because he was already in office. The first president to have to follow it was Dwight d eisenhower.
  • Harry Trueman's opinion

    Harry Truman openly spoke down about the amendment. He said it was stupid and one of the worst amendments in the Constitution. Despite speaking down on it, he chose not to run for a second term
  • Bill Clinton's opinion

    Bill Clinton said he didn't like it because presidents live longer now than they did back then, so it should be changed to work with that. Nothing ever came of it, though.
