  • The Geneva Accords

    The Geneva Accords split North and South Vietnam into two. An agreement was made that within 2 years there would be elections to unify the two halves, but they never came.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her action started the Montgomery bus boycott.
  • U.S. Soldier Killed

    The first kill of a U.S. soldier in Vietnam was in South Vietnam when guerillas were raiding their living quarters near Saigon.
  • Backup from JFK

    JFK sends helicopters as well as 400 Green Berets to South Vietnam to perform secret actions against the Viet Cong.
  • The Marches

    Over 1,000 black schoolchildren march in a non-violent protest. Eventually things escelate and police bring dogs, hoses. This caused outrage and eventually an agreement was made to desegregate bathrooms and lunch counters.
  • JFK Assasination

    JFK is assassinated, and Lyndon B. Johnson becomes president.
  • I Have A Dream

    Martin Luther King Jr. gave his I Have a Dream speech to 250,000 viewers.
  • Protests Begin

    Norman Morrison, a 31-year-old pacifist, lights himself on fire in front of the Pentagon to protest the Vietnam War. Meanwhile, U.S. troops in Vietnam rise to 400,000.
  • MLK Jr. Assassination

    Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room by James Earl Ray.
  • Vietnam Draft Begins

    The U.S. government begins the first draft lottery since World War II
