Naty becomes ill with peritonitis (inflammation of abdominal wall) and a perforated appendix. When the doctors performed surgery, "everything just burst" according to Naty. She was referred to a cardiologist, Dr. Orlando Fernandez, who saved her life.

Castro becomes acting President of the Law School
Castro never achieved the highest offices in University, always refusing to subordinate himself entirely to one group or another. His highest position was acting President due to the Law School when the Executive Comittee withdrew support from the current President. Castro, however, did become Vice President of the Law School.

Castro Joins the Ortodoxo Party
In 1947, Castro joined the Party of the Cuban People (or Orthodox Party; Partido Ortodox), founded by veteran politician Eduardo Chibás. Chibás advocated social justice, honest government, and political freedom, while his party exposed corruption and demanded reform. Though Chibás came third in the 1948 general election, Castro remained committed to working on his behalf. More on the Ortodox party, their expected win in 1952 Presidential Elections. See: -
Lansky has childhood friend killed
Ben Siegel, who had started the Flamingo hotel-casino in Nevada with help from his childhood friend Lansky, is assassinated. This decision had been taken at the Havana conference, ballooning costs had investors mad and untrustworthy.

Castro became embroiled in the violent gangsterismo culture within the university. Passionate about anti-imperialism and opposing U.S. intervention in the Caribbean, he unsuccessfully campaigned for the presidency of the Federation of University Students on a platform of "honesty, decency and justice". Became critical of corruption of Grau's government, delivers a fiery public speech November 1946 that received coverage on the front page of several newspapers. -
Castro Joins International Expedition to Topple Trujillo
In August 1947, Castro learned of a planned expedition to overthrow the right-wing government of Rafael Trujillo, a U.S. ally, in the Dominican Republic. Trains for several months. The expedition launched on 20 Sept. is intercepted the next day. Five miles off the coast of northern Oriente, Fidel jumps shit and swims lest he be killed by Masferrer his bitter enemy as a student gangster.

Mirta enters junior year at university
Fidel had skipped many of his studies and did not qualify for standard enrollment due to his involvement with the failed Dominican expedition. Mirta remained in a relationship with him and continued her studies dutifully.

Batista's second son with Marta is born
Roberto Francisco (Bobby) Batista Fernández was born in New York. In 2021 he wrote Hijo de Batista, a memoir about his difficulties judging his father, which has significant historical distortions.
