North Africa Campaigns (Africa)
Africa was dominated by colonization during WW2; thus, the empires that controlled them used their soldiers and resources to aid them in their war efforts. Britain wanted to seize control of the Suez Canal. The result of the campaigns was that the Axis took control of North Africa. -
Pearl Harbor (The United States and Japan)
Pearl Harbor was an unexpected attack on the United State's military base in Honolulu, Hawaii. Up until this point, the United States was neutral in WW2, but this caused them to fully enter the war. -
The End of World War 2 (World-wide)
After devastating the whole world, WW2 came to an end in 1945. The main event that triggered the end of WW2 was the United State's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan which had short-term and long-term effects on the people of Japan. -
Nuremberg Trials (Europe)
After the clear distinction that WW2 was caused by Germany, the Nuremberg trials were conducted to prosecute Nazis of murder, war crimes, and large-scale attacks. The Allied Powers acted as the judges. -
The Beginning of the Cold War (United States and Russia)
The United States and the Soviet Union were the leading powers after World War 2. The Cold War was not an actual war, but a series of tense events between the two countries that showed the disagreement in political ideologies: Communism and Capitalism. The Cold War was kicked off by Churchill's declaration of the "Iron Curtain" that separated the Western states and Eastern European states. -
British Relinquishes Control of India (Asia and Europe)
After several nonviolent movements led by Mahatma Gandhi and an economic strain on Britain caused by World War 2, India received their independence. India and Pakistan were declared as two separate countries. -
Arab-Israeli War (The Middle East)
After decades of tensions between the Arabs and the Jews, war finally broke out. The British were unsuccessful at solving the issue between the two countries, they passed it over to the United Nations who were also unsuccessful. Israel proclaimed itself an independent state, so Iraq, Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, and Lebanon invaded Palestine. Israel ended up gaining territory and the war ended in 1949. -
Execution of The People's Republic of China (Asia)
After a victory over the Nationalists during the Chinese Civil War, communist leader Mao Zedong enforced the People's Republic of China. It established a command economy and set the foundation for communist rule of China for decades to come.
