14th Amendment History Timeline

  • Civil War Ended

    Southern States kept on passing laws that gave slaves less and less rights as more laws were passed.
  • Creating the Amendment

    In late April, Thaddeus Stevens created an idea to protect the civil rights for blacks, equal protection under the law for everyone. He made plans in deciding how citizens are elected for the House of representatives, punishment for people who break the law and passing for federal and state governments from paying the debts of former Confederate states.
  • Amendment to the States for ratifying.

    The many Southern States did not want to ratify the Amendment but forced by Congress to have any sort of representation in Congress.
  • Civil rights act was Vetoed

    People who were against slavery worried that the act would take away the act and take away the rights to blacks.
  • Civil rights act was passed

    Congress passed this act which guaranteed citizenship to everyone born in the United States regardless of their race, skin color, or previous enslavement.
  • House and Senate Vote

    They Agree on the Amendment!
  • The 14th Amendment becomes Ratified!

    the 2/3 of the states, including South Carolina (a more populated slavery state) made it for the 14th Amendment to be Approved! Wo Hoo!!
