In 1585, Queen Elizabeth allowed Raleigh to send over 100 men from England to Roanoke Island after two of his explorers found it to be a perfect place for a settlement. -
John White and his family arrived in 1587 and he was put in charge of the settlement, Roanoke Colony. -
It took England two years to defeat the Spanish and when White returned to Roanoke in 1590 he had a grave discovery that nobody was there! -

In the fall of 1621, after a successful harvest, Governor William Bradford had a celebration feast. He invited Squanto, Cheif Massasoit, and 90 Wampanoag people to the feast. He wanted to show thanks and negotiate a treaty that would secure land. -
Maryland was the 4th original colony and they became a state on April 28,1788. -
In 1681, William Penn was given new land in the New World from King Charlies II. He named this land "Sylvania" which means "woods" but later called it Pennsylvania.
