  • Minamata Disease

    A neurological disorder caused by mercury poisoning. It was discovered in the Minamata bay in Japan and is primarily caused by consuming contaminated shellfish. Originally found in cats as they were staggering and dancing.
  • Silent Spring

    Book written by Rachel Carson which explains the effects of the synthetic pesticide DDT. The name comes from the wildlife which died and the forests could become “silent”. The book is a warning for the dangerous effects of chemicals on our environment. Helped create earth day in 1970

  • Earth Day

    Inspired by preceding events such as the publishment of Silent Spring as well as the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill Senator Gaylord Nelson created the national Earth Day.

    A gas leak at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal India occurred after gas and water seeped in through a hairline crack. The accident caused poisonous gas to effect townspeople.

    Complete meltdown on some of the nuclear reactors in the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine. The site is still highly restricted with elevated radiation levels especially near the “Elephants Foot” site.

    Julia Butterfly Hill was a climate most known for her “tree sit” from 1997 to 1999 spanning 738 days. She stayed atop the redwood tree “Luna” located in Northern California to protest Pacific Lumber’s logging and clear cutting of old growth redwood forests.
  • An Inconvenient Truth

    The film was made by former vice president Al Gore and presented topics surrounding the environmental decline of the worth. Topics included the ozone layer, pollution, air quality, and the energy crisis.
  • Fukushima

    The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster was a nuclear accident caused by the Tohōku earthquake which triggered a tsunami which impacted the Fukushima plant which was situated on the shore.
