End of French and Indian War
The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War, with the British being the victors. Colonists were frustrated with having to deal with British problems, increased taxes and Indian relations. -
Sugar Act
The sugar act expanded on the molasses act, reducing the tax rate to 3 cents per gallon, but enforcing it more heavily. Colonists were annoyed that they couldn't be tried in their own courts. -
Stamp Act
This act declared that papered goods had to be marked with a stamp, being a purely profit-based act. Colonists decided to boycott goods, being dissatisfied with this, protesting the Stamp Act. -
Declaratory Act
Though the Stamp Act was repealed, this was passed to declare that the British could tax the colonists as they saw fit. The colonists enjoyed the repeal but were not pleased by this act. -
Townshend Acts
Tax imported goods and made it more difficult to smuggle. The colonists were very unsatisfied with this development, boycotting British goods and making their own. -
Tea Act
Allowed the British East India Company to sell tea to the colonies. Colonists were unnecessarily angered and staged the Boston Tea Party in response. -
Start of the Revolutionary War
Armed conflicts began between minutemen and British Troops at Lexington and Concord. Colonists became fully committed to seeking independence.
