    The invasion of Poland by the Soviet Union was a military action conducted without a formal declaration of war. The Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east on September 17, 1939, sixteen days after Germany invaded Poland from the west.

    Churchill Becomes Prime Minister.

    Churchill succeeded Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister. Churchill established a national government and led Britain's participation in the Allied war effort against the Axis powers, which ended in victory in 1945. He became Leader of the Opposition when the Conservatives were defeated in the 1945 general election.
