  • A serbian terrosrit assassinates Austrian Archduke Francais Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of the Austro-HUngarian empire

  • Austria declared war on Serbia

  • Theodore Roosevelt declined the Progressive party's nomination for presdient in 1916 and rejoined the Rpublicans.

    This decision virtually destroyed any chance of the Progressive party surviving.

  • Zimmermann Telegram

    US newspapers carried shocking news of a secret offer made by Germany to mexico. German foregin minister Zimmermann, propsed that Mexcio ally itself witih Germany in return for Germay's pledge to help Mexicio revover lost territories.
    The telegram aroused the nationalist anger of the American people and convinced Wilson that Germany fully expected war with United States.

  • Russian Revolutionaries overthrew the Czar's government and proclaimed a republic

    This barrier to U.S participation was removed.

    Wilson's speech condemned Germay's submarine policy as"warfare against makind" and declared: "the world msut be made safe for democracy."
