On July 18, 1922 Thomas Samuel Kuhn was born in Cincinnati Ohio to Samuel and Minette Kuhn. His father was an industrial engineer. Both of his parents were Jewish.

In 1943 Kuhn graduated from Harvard with a bachelors degree in Physics.
