    Berlin Blockade

    The city of Berlin was in the heart of the cold war. Since the Western powers of the USSR were in conflict over the political aspect of Germany, and were unable to resolve the conflict, the Soviet Union stopped all shipments to Berlin and cut off electricity. When the blockade ended, 320 days later, the Soviet Union gave into the Western powers.

    NATO was established
    NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and was enacted after WWII to help prevent the spread of communism. After the fall of communism, NATO turned into a political power instead of a military force.
  • Rosenbergs Executions

    Rosenbergs Executions
    Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed on electrical chairs at Sing Sing Prison only a day after their wedding anniversary. There was worldwide controversy whether both were guily for spying.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Teh Warsaw pact was placed as a mutual defense organization by the Soviet Union including seven of its European allies. Allies included Soviet Unior, albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria.

    Sputnik was Launched into Orbit
    Sputnik was involved the Race for Space and was the first saillite to be launched into orbit. After the Russians launched Sputnik the Americans were alarmed and afraid that it was a form of spying.
  • Construction of Berlin Wall

    Construction of Berlin Wall
    East German government made the decision to assumble the wall to close the Berlin Border. Initially the wall stood six feet tall with barbed wire on top and had guard dogs and machine guns to control trafic between the two halves of Berlin. While many were successful in crossing the border, over 100 were killed during the act.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    U.S. Aircraft took pictures of the missile sites in Cuba. President Kennedy ordered a "naval quarantine" of Cuba on October 22. That same day, Khrushchev declared that Kennedy's quarantine was an act of aggression and continued to place the missiles in Cuba.

    Neil Armstrong, "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins landing on the Moon solidified the American win of the Space Race.

    On January 20th of 1980 Jimmy Carter threatened to boycott the Moscow Olympics if the Soviet Union didn't withdraw their troops from Afghanistan.
  • Miracle Olympic Hockey Team

    Leading up the the contest the Soviet Union was heavily favorited and expected to win against the United States. During the 1980 Winter Olympics hosted in New York, the United States were on to win gold against the Soviet Union. Til this day "Miracle on Ice" is known as the most popular nternational ice hockey story.

    On October 7th 1989 The Hungarian party turned into a communist party and many citizens stormed the streets because they were opposed to communism.
  • Berlin Wall Falls

    Berlin Wall Falls
    Citizens attacked the Berlin Wall due to the fact that East Germany officials were not respecting their rights as citizens. East German citizens outnumbered the soliders forcing the officials to open the gates and let them pass through. This act was a symbol of freedom to West Berliners and East Germans.
