    Iron Curtain descends on Europe

    A symbolization of the physicalboundary and ideological conflict dividing Europe into two separate areas. The countries connected to/influenced by the Soviet Union were on the east side. On either side of the Iron Curtain, states formed new governments, and militaries.

    This conference was held at Cecilienhof, in Potsdam, Germany. Joseph Stalin and Harry Truman were in attendence at this Conference. One of the goals in this meeting was to discuss peace treaties issues.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    This was a famous speech that President Harry S. Truman gave stating that the US would partnership with Greece and Turkey to prevent them from falling into the Soviet Sphere. This speech became the base of the president's foreign policy.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The American plan to aid Europe. The United States gave economic support to European nations reguarding their economy losses from WWII. This plan was called this ERP, European Recovery Program.

    This was the first establishment of a Jewish State in 2,000 years. This declaration occurred in Tel Aviv. This is the homeland of the Hebrew language and of Christianity and Judaism.

    Berlin Air Lift

    Western Allies organized this after the Berlin Blockade, to carry supplies to West Berlin's people. 200,000 flights were flown in one single year, providing many tons of necessities, like food and water. After the Airlift, 3 major airports in the western part of the city were used as primary gateways to Germany from the Soviet Union for another fifity years.

    Otherwise known as the National Atlantic Treaty Organiziton. This is a military organization, affiliated with the government based on the North Atlantic Treaty. This alliance contains a system of collective defenses: the memebers state agreements to mutual defenses in response to a foreign attack from outside forces.

    The war was between the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Korea). This war was the primary result of the political division of Korea into two separate parts (North and South).

    Death of Joesph Stalin
    He was the leader of the Soviet Union until his death. The concept of "socialism in one country" was in affect under Stalin's ruling. He took power after Vladimir Lenin died.

    This was a treaty signed by the Soviet Union and seven of its Euopean Satellites. This was the military compliment to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CoMEcon). Exstensively took place in the Cold War period.

    Known as the Suez War and also the Suez Canal Crisis. This was a military confrontation between Egypt on one side and Britain, France, and Israel on the other. The United States played a major role in this confrontation- telling Britain and Israel to "back out".

    This war took place in Cambodia, Loas, and Vietnam. The US conducted a fairly large strategtic bombing campaign against North Vietnam. The US Government viewed American involement as a way to prevent Communism taking over South Vietnam. The US involvement had escalated in the 1960s.

    This was the first artificial Earth Satelliate. The Soviet Union launched this satellite in low Earth orbit. This was the start of the "Space Race" with the United States. The satellite traveled about 29,000 kilometers per hour. It spent 3 months in orbit before it burned on January 4th, 1958.

    The second spacecraft to be launched into Earth's Orbit. This was the first to carry a dog (named Laika), let alone a living being! The speed on orbit of it was 4.576 miles per second.

    NASA is other wise known as the National Aeronauticas and Space Administration. This program was a major advancement in the national "Space Race". President Dwight D. Eisenhower created this U.S. program.

    A failed military invasion of Cuba. The Central Alliance Agency (CIA) Brigade 2506 fronted the armed wing of the Democratic Revolutionary Front and intended to overthrow the revolutionary left-wing government.

    The Berlin Wall was constructed by the German Democratic Republic. This wall separated East Berlin and West Berlin. This wall was known as the "Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart", sometimes called the "Wall of Shame".

  • USS Pueblo Incident (AGER-2)

    USS Pueblo Incident (AGER-2)
    USS Pueblo was an American technical research ship. It was boarded and captured by North Korea on January 23rd, 1968. This is the third ship named after Pueblo County, Colorado. Commander Lloyd M. Bucher was the commanding officer of the USS Pueblo. This is the only U.S. Navy ship still being held captive today.

    Played an immortant role in normalizing relations between this US and China. This visit marked the first time meeting the People's Republic of China. This visit ended 25 years of separation between the two sides.

    Paris Peace Accords
    Established to make peace in Vietnam and also to end the Vietnam War. This temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam. The US, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Provisional Revolutionary Government signed this Agreement.

    The People's Army of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam War were the captors. This event marked the end of the Vietnam War.

    This was a crisis between the United States and Iran. Fifty-two citzens were held captive for 444 days after a group of Iran students took over the US Embassy in Tehran (the capital of Iran). This event occurred when President Jimmy Carter was in office.

    This war was fought between the Soviet Union and mulit-naitonal groups called the Mujahideen. In Afghanistan, this war has been sometimes known as the "Soviet Union's Vietnam War".

    Occured in the Moscow Olympics. The US protested against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The boycott was carried out by the Soviet Union and other Communist-friendly countries.

    Korean Air Lines Flight 007
    On this day the airline server was shot down by a Soviet interceptor near Moneron Islands. All 269 people including crew members and passengers on that flight had died. This flight was scheduled to through Korean Air Lines and go from New York to Seoulvia Anchorage.

    This USSR, otherwise known as the Union of Soivet Republics, formally ceased to exist on this date. The Soviet Military and the country's Communist Party tried to over take Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev, and re-establish the Soviet Union. The dissolution to the country had also brought an end to the Cold War.

    This was a political scandal in the US that mainly was noticed in 1986. While President Reagan was in office, senior administration secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran.

    This was a nuclear accident that occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. This was the most powerful and horrific nuclear power plant disaster in history because of the exstensive costs and this significant number of deaths.

    Otherwise known as the June Fourth Incident. This incident started as a protest but shortly turned into a massacre by troops with rifles and tanks. The troops even shot at innocent people.

    This treaty consisted of 3 things: 1. Non-Profliferation, 2. Disarmament, 3. The Right to Peacefully use Nuclear Technology. The objective of this treaty is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapon technology.
