    Hiroshima Bomb
    From the start of the Cold War is when World War ll was nearly ending. An American B-29 bomber dropped the first atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The first bomb killed over 80,000 people with its explosion. A second B-29 bomb was dropped 3 days later killing 40,000 people. Which later came with surrender by Japan's emperor Hirohito.

  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was established by President Harry S. Truman, which provided political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under attack. By presenting the Truman doctrine during his speech he then was taking a tough stance against the Soviet Union. This has been seen as the official declaration of the Cold War.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall plan named after George Marshall and was also formally named The European Recovery Program. The Marshall plan was used for economic support provided by the United States. The United States tried using the Marshal Plan as a way to binding and connecting the Western Countries. They were providing aid and protection to these countries from communism. Even the Soviet Union and all the countries under their influence were asked and declined the offer.

    The Korean War began when the North Korean Army crossed over the 38th parallel and invaded into South Korea. The was the first military action of the Cold War. The Russions would occupy the North side while the United States occupied the South side of Korea. Nearly 5 million people died during the 3 years of the war. Finally the Korean War came to an end in July of 1953.

    Vietnam War
    The war went from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975. By 1969, 500,000 US troops were stationed in Vietnam. The United States became the ally of the South Vietnam. This also caused another major conflict with the Soviet Union who was an ally of North Vietname who were to take over and invade into the South.

    Sputnik
    The Soviet Union successfully launched the Sputnik into space. Being the first in the world to put a beach ball sized satellite into orbit. Although this was one single event that happened, this began the start of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. On Novemeber 3rd, they launched Sputnik 2 with a heavier load carrying a dog named Laika.

    Space Race
    The Space Race first began when the Russians launched the worlds first satellite into space. The United States launched their own satellite in 1958. This is also where President Dwight Eisenhower established (NASA) National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a federal angency dedicated to space exploration.
    The Soviet Union also created and launched Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the moon.

    Creation of the Berlin Wall
    The Wall became a physical division between West Berlin and East Germany in order to keep East further away from the West. The Berlin Wall then fell on November 9th, 1989.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a straight, aggressive argument between the United States and the Soviet Union. This carried on for 13-days between the two countries. The Soviets made a secret agreement with Cuban premier Fidel Castro, where they would place weapons on their land for any future invasions.     John F. Kennedy Assination
    On November 22, 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in an open top convertible. He was the 35th President of the United States. He was a respected and loved man, hundred of thousands of people lined the streets of Washington as they watched a horse-drawn caisson bear his body to St. Matthew’s Cathedral for a mass. At 2:39pm Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States.

    Apallo 11
    On July 20, 1969 at 4:17pm, 2 astronauts named Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to land on the moon. Not only did America win the Space Race against the Soviet Union, but as Armstrong says "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind". The two astronauts safely returned to earth with rock samples from the moon.

    The Four Power Agreement made between Russia, USA, Britain, and France reconfirmed the rights and the responsibilities of those contries with regards to Berlin.
  • SALT

    SALT
    SALT stands for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. This was negotiation between the United States and the Soviet Union that was aimed towards eliminating the missiles aimed at both territories that contained nuclear weapons. SALT was first brought up by President Johnson. SALT 2 was brought into negotiation later on in the year of 1972.

    START
    START which stands for Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. The negotiation between the two countries first started in the mid 1970s, was brought up again in 1985 and then settled in July of 1971. This treaty was between the United States and the Soviet Union which was geared towards reducing the amount of nuclear warheads, missiles and bombers that the two countries had.

    End of the Soviet Union
    On Christmas Day, all those who were apart of the Soviet republics (Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) all met and announced they were parting from the Soviet Union and becoming their on Independent States. Many say that neither the United States of the Soviet Union won the cold war.
