The Atom

  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
    • He made the law of multiple proportions -all matter is made up of indivisble atoms -atoms of the same element are the same -atoms of different elements aren't the same -atoms combine in whole number ratios to form compounds
  • JJ Thomson

    JJ Thomson
JJ used cathode rays to discover the electron measured the bending of the rays in order to determine charge to mass ratio of the electron.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Ernest conducted the gold foil expierment. He placed alpha particles onto gold foil. Most of the particles went right past the foil, but some of them were deflected. Because of this expierment he concluded that the atom is mostly empty space, with a very small nucleus core.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
He answered why electrons aren't pulled to the middle of the nucleus.

-Electrons travel in definite energy levels without radiating energy,
-Electrons in each orbit have a certain amount of energy
-Energy increases as distance increases between the nucleus and the electron
-Electrons lose energy by dropping energy levels
  • Schrodinger

    Schrodinger
    He created the wave equation.
-Treat the electron like a wave
-Developed an equation used to determine the probablitly of finding the electron in any given place around the nucleus
-Solutions to this equation are quantum numbers
