    Rome was a growing empire and they were taking over most of Europe, some Asia, and the top of Africa. The conquered the Iberian Peninsula and named it Hispania. They also had control of Portugal naming it Lusitania.

    The Visigoths were an East Germanic tribe that was pushed onto the Iberian Peninsula by the Huns. They took over a bunch of Spain and started to push Rome out. Since Rome was so big they could not get messages from one side to the other in a short time period.
