I chose to include events of political significance in my timeline because I believe that they helped to mold the environment that I live in today. These political events are what have most dramatically shaped this country's social climate. I think that the social climate of the United States is what has impacted me the most in regards to my development as a person and as a citizen. These issues are what are most relevant to me and in my life right now. -

After months of unraveling, the economy finally comes crashing down in 2008, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling 4.4% in one day, Lehman Brothers filing for bankruptcy, and Bush putting mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under government conservatorship. -

Barack Obama is inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. -
Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
An explosion and fire on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect sends millions of gallons of oil into the sea. The spill kills 11 and is the largest off-shore spill in U.S. history as well as one of the largest spills in world history. -
Edward Snowden admits that he was behind National Security Agency leaks
June 6th, The Guardian receives information on the NSA using PRISM to spy on the web activities, including email, of U.S. citizens, w/ direct access to Facebook, YouTube, Skype, Google, Apple, Yahoo and other sites. June 8th, The Guardian publishes a report on NSA tool Boundless Informant, used by the U.S. government to watch activity in every country in the world. President Obama confirms existence of PRISM and its use to spy on the online activity of U.S. citizens. -

Donald Trump is inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. -
Executive Order 13769
Entitled "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States", order signed by President Trump limiting the number of refugee arrivals to the U.S. to 50,000 for 2017 and suspending USRAP for 120 days. Order also indefinitely suspends the entry of Syrian refugees and alien nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries (Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen) for 90 days, after which an updated list will be made.
