The U.S. took control of P.R. from Spain at the end of Spanish-American War. -

Political Education was to conserve de Spanish and acquire the English language. First two grades in Spanish and English as a special subject. In high school all the clases were in English and Spanish was a special subject. Increase in the English Language Education
1902-1904 Increase on the use of the English Language use in the schools having the idea to make it the oficial language in all schools of the island. -

1921-1930 Huyke - Was in favor of the English education in the island. -
Dr. José Padín Recovered the Spanish Language
1930-1950 Dr. José Padín - said that the English language was a foreign language and fought for the integration of the spanish language in the education program. The English language was not lost but placed as a second language. -

Tried to implament the bilingual education in the island but failed because of the political protests. -

The Department of Education and Universities get together to gather funds for those students who arrive from the U.S. This program is called "Bilingual Education". -

Gov. Luis Fortuño has establish a project were math, science, language arts are to be taught in English. This should be implamented in all public schools in the island in the next 10yrs. He beleives that learning English will provide more professional opportunities for our children.
