Stage 1- Trust vs. Mistrust- Ages birth to 18 mos.

Stage one of Erickson's stages is from birth to 18 months. The infant is dependent on a caregiver for the continuation of its life, by feeling safe and receiving positive affection. Erickson writes that the infant has "hope" that his/her world will turn out all right.

Stage 2- Autonomy vs. Shame and doubt- Ages 18 months to 3 years

In Erikson's second stage, which spans from 18 months to three years of age, children begin to develop autonomy, as they want to dress themselves, eat from their plates, and walk longer distances. They get to choose what they want to wear, what foods to eat first, and how far they can walk without help. At this stage, some parents may impose harsh discipline and criticism, causing the child to feel shame and guilt.
  • Stage 3- Initiative vs. Guilt-Ages 3 to 5 or 6 years of age

Stage 3- Initiative vs. Guilt-Ages 3 to 5 or 6 years of age

In this age, children are in preschool, learning to interact with other children on proper social etiquette. Children are curious creatures with an active imagination coupled with lots of energy, with positive guidance from teachers or caregivers, and with clear boundaries of what they can and cannot do. The children can feel confident and secure in their little community.
