    The great Chicago fire happened on October 8, 1871 at 8:30 p.m. in a barn outside of Chicago. When Catherine was milking a cow it accidentally kicked over a lantern and started the fire but it spread faster than Catherine expected. But the reason it put the whole city in flames is that the city was made of wood and they were preparing for winter and so there was wood everywhere and it lasted for two straight days and ended on October 10, 1871 and killed about 300 people.
