    The Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan
    The Truman Doctrine was when president Truman decided to use American military and money to stop communism from spreading. He helped the government in Greece to beat a communist war. The Truman doctrine was a change from previous foreign policy.The initial intention of the Marshall Plan was an American initiative to aid Western Europe. The Marshall Plan was put into place to improve the different economic situations and to discourage communism.
  • Communist Coup in Czechoslovakia

    Communist Coup in Czechoslovakia
    The Soviets pushed aside the elected government because they wanted a possible rearmament of Germany. when the US loaned Czechoslovakia money, their economy went out of control which made the government vulnerable and that allowed communists to gain a lot of power.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    The Soviet Union imposed the blockade to keep out communist influence so they blocked off all roads into Berlin to keep their ideologies within. The American and British planes decided to fly in all supplies to the people of Berlin, the Berlin Airlift went on for one year before they realized that the wall was no longer an option.

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is an intergovernmental military alliance. This was used because the Berlin Blockade created fear that Stalin was going to attack Western Europe. If any member apart of NATO were attacked by Russians, they were to fight back.

    The Korean War started when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th parallel and invaded the non-communist South Korea. The U.N (United Nations) helped support South Korea who was not a member nation. China was involved in the Korean War because they came to help fight the US and the United Nations.

    Guatemala asked the US for help in their government. The US wanted to secretly remove the Guatemalan president
  • Polish and Hungarian Unrest

    Polish and Hungarian Unrest
    There was a revolt in Hungary which was close to a student demonstration before gaining thousands as they would progress to march through Budapest. No opening force would stop them and they saw that as a success. Poland revolt happened in June against the Soviet Union, they were defeated by the communist government of Poland.

    The Berlin wall was created to keep their ideologies in and keep communism out. When the wall fell, that was when The Cold War began to thin out. It is a very powerful symbol that represents The Cold War.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    The USSR provided military, economic and political assistance in Cuba which allowed them to start an alliance. Khrushchev wanted to plant the missiles because it would increase his nations strike capability. The US was involved because they were in an intense political standoff for 13 days over the installation of missiles all over Cuba. They feared that they were on the edge of a nuclear war that would disrupt the whole world.

    Vietnam was covered in all sorts of traps, severe weather changes. Many soldiers became ill before the violence. The American troops weren’t 100% sure what they were going to fight. The US went in partially blindsided because they weren’t prepared for what to expect. The Americans allied with South Vietnam. And opposition the the US, began to divide Americans when Nixon withdrew US forces in 1973.

    When Czechoslovakia chose a new leader, Alexander Dubeck, he wanted to make the communist rule more tolerant. All sorts of public news was filled with discussion of communist ideas.The Russians were afraid that their people would want the same ideals as Dubeck. they believed that it would weaken the USSR in Eastern Europe.
    The Russians took over Czechoslovakia and that was the end of the Prague Spring.It was a warning to other countries in Eastern Europe.
  • Detente

    Detente means a release of tension. improved relations between the US and the Soviet. Tension between the US and Communist China was lessened due to a game of ping pong. Before ping pong, tension between the US and China were high because of war propaganda, after ping pong China didn’t look down at the US, that was when "Ping Pong Diplomacy" was created.

    Salvador Allende was a Chilean physician and politician who was the first marxist who became president. His presidency palace was bombed, the armed forces of Chile brought Allende to the end of his power. Augusto Pinochet took over.

    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan because they wanted to bring up communism in the government.The US made a lot of allies in the middle east. It is ironic after 9/11 because the US has been in a huge feud with the Middle East.

    The Sandinistas were a democratic and socialist political group in Nicaragua. They overthrew the president, Anastasio Debayle ending 46 years of dictatorship. When Reagan was elected president he wanted to overthrow the “marxist Sandinistas of Nicaragua” The US sent Contras (US right wing rebel groups) across the border into Nicaragua causing havoc throughout the whole population.

    Mikhail Gorbachev from Politburo to Presidency
    Although he was the general secretary for the communist party he was the one who brought the cold war to an end. He brought the cold war to an end by the fall of the iron curtain, and introducing glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost= closeness and transparency.
    Perestroika= political movement of the reformation of the Communist Party in Soviet Russia.

    Reagan refers to the Soviet Union as the “evil empire” he took an aggressive stance that exceeded the Soviet’s military capabilities. The threat of nuclear warfare causes tension between the US and the Soviet Union, and the Soviet was trying to spread communism.

    Operation Desert Storm, also known as the Gulf War, was leading the buildup of troops and defence of Saudi Arabia. Iraq had political and economic problems and forced to seek international support, the UN did not want to be involved in illegal war. The UN headquarters were bombed and 15 members were killed and that was when they decided to pull out of contact with Iraq.

    The US went into war with Iraq because Bush told the country that the US was going to war with Iraq because of the threat of Saddam's weapons of mass destruction. The US said that Iraq had ties with terrorism.

    ISIS is Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. ISIL is Islamic State and the Levant. ISIS is a very violent group. They are fighting against religions, the Sunni and the Shia. They have proven that anyone who opposes them will be killed.
