This idea was thought up by Democritus and Leucippus. Leucippus came up with atomism and Democritus cam up with the idea that all matter contained atoms. Their atom model is simply a circle.

-
John Dalton kept the same model as Democritus. Dalton came up with Dalton's Atomic Theory and the Law of Simple Multiple Proportions.
-
J.J. Thomson came up with the Plumb Pudding Model. He is also credited with discovering the electron using cathode ray tubes.
-
Planck came up with the idea that if atoms vibrate hard enough you can measure their energy. In his model a ring goes around the center of the atom and has electrons on the rings.
-
Rutherford used the Gold Foil Expirement to disprove the Plumb Pudding Model. Rutherford is also credited with discovering the nucleus of an atom
-
Bohr was inspired by Planck and improved Rutherford's model. He had the nucleus in the center of the atom and rings going around it. The rings contained electrons.
-
Millikan mainly worked with electrons and found their charge. He has no atom model
-
Chadwick discovered the neutron. His model is just like Bohr's model but contains neutrons in its nucleus.

The Modern View of the atom is where you can see the nucleus and there seems to be a fuzzy type circle around it. The fuzzy circle contains electrons moving at a very fast pace so it makes it seem blurry. The people who have contibuted to the modern view are John Dalton, Joseph Proust, J.J. Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, Chadwick, and Murray Gell Mann.
