History of Early Childhood Education

  • Jahann Amos Comenius

    Johann wrote the first children's picture book which was published in 1658. He believed that education should should follow a child's natural development and kids best learned through hands on experiences rather then memorization. He believed this would allow children to learn effectively at their own pace.
  • John Locke

    John Locke is an English philosopher who is known as the founder of modern educational philosophy which he based off the method and study of the mind and learning. He also had a theory that all children were born neutral.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau

    Jean-Jacques Rousseau had the idea that children were born good not evil. He stated that these children should have more flexibility in school and time to do other activities they are interested in. His revolutionary ideas are still held up now and help kids have less anxiety and stress. Things like free play are based of of Rousseau's beliefs.
  • Friedrich Will help Froebel

    Froebel was a main contributor to early childhood education and was known as the Father of Kindergarten. He believed that education should be fun and it will help them better remember what they were learning. He was a supporter of children having play times.
  • Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi

    Johann was a swiss educator who believed developing a child's senses will help them get the best education possible. Learning with your hands is the best way for a kid to remember and that teaching in groups was more helpful then fully individually
  • Kindergarten

    Germany was the first country to have kindergarten. Kindergarten has gone through many social changes throughout the years. At first it was for poor students and then it went to be led by churches. The kindergarten we know today is the first grade that students enter when they go to school to help them become more independent and prepared for the following grades.
  • Social Reform

    Social Reform is making changes to improve education and opportunities for young children. It helps build children's social and physical well being. This means playing a role in the first stages of a child’s physical and social welfare.
  • Robert Owen

    Robert Owen believed people were naturally good but are harmed by poor environments and treatment. He worked to improve conditions for factory workers and their children. He was very opposed of child labor and worked to limit children's work hours. Owen opened a school focused on guidance, music, dancing, nature study, stories etc.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik gave a need for better education in the USA. Launched by the Soviet union, Sputnik led to a higher focus on early childhood education. This caused teachers to start teaching skills like building more and showed the need of children's education in future success of America.
  • Nursery schools

    The term "nursery schools" refers to a nurturing environment for young children that focuses on growth and play. These provide basic care, meet children's needs and support early learning.
  • Rudolf Steiner

    Steiner was an Austrian philosopher who founded Waldorf education because he believed that childhood was an important stage in life that should be taken care of. His belief was to educate the whole child from imagination, creativity, self discipline etc. He thought that these kids teachers should be sort of mother like to help develop these skills.
  • Maria Montessori

    Montessori was the first woman in Italy to get granted a medical degree and she used it to study children's disease. She worked with children intellectual disabilities and opened her own preschool. She helped these kids succeed even with everything they deal with.
  • DAP

    DAP stands for developmentally appropriate practice. means teaching children in ways that match their age, abilities, and interests. It helps teachers choose activities that children can understand and enjoy. DAP also supports how kids grow socially, emotionally, and academically. It makes learning easier and more effective for children.
  • Head Start

    Head Start is a program that focuses on education, social, medical, dental, nutritional and health services. This was made to help preschoolers who were in a lower income family get needed services.
  • High Scope

    High Scope is an education focused on growing children's independence , critical thinking and social development
  • A. S .Neill

    A. S. Neill was a strong supporter of "free/natural" education and believed children learn best when they are giving freedom and trust. At Neill's school, children were "self governed". They had equal rights as adults and were not forced to learn, based on his belief that children were naturally good and will develop fully when given freedom to do their own interests.
  • Media and Technology

    Media and technology are now a major part of children's lives and strongly impact how they learn and understand things in their lives. It talks about the need to balance technology use with what know about brain development. To much technology use can push children to grow faster and rush through their childhood.
  • Standards

    Standards says that teachers have to teach certain things depending on the age and grade that the children they are teaching are in. These were made to make sure children learn what will best help them reach their potential
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind is an educational law that was put in place to hold teachers and schools accountable by making students take standardized tests. This was made to make sure that everyone got an equal education.
