    People's Republic of China Created
    This lead to the Chinese Revolution. After peace talks break down an all-out war between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party of China. This created a new enemy for the US while a new ally to the Soviet Union.

    North Koreans launched a surprise attack on South Korea. On the North Korean side: Soviet Union, People's Republic of China & Democratic People's Republic of Korea. On the South Koreans side: United Nations, Republic of Korea, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand & Turkey. This was the first time the UN was used by the USA as a foreign policy tool.

    Hungarian Uprising
    Students and workers took to the streets of Budapest to gain rights: personal freedom, more food, removal of the secret police, and removal of Russian control. Hungray got control and the Russians had another enemy.

    The race between the Soviet Union and the USA to send a ship into space. Major part of the space race was Sputnik being launched.

    The Soviet Union launched Sputnik. This was the start of the Great Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States.

    U2 Spy Plane Shot Down
    A US U2 Spy plane was shot down over Russia. The US denied it say it was a weather plane. This lead to the relationship with Russia and the US declining.

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
    This lead to a East and West Germany. Hundreds died trying to get over the wall.

    Czechoslovakian Uprising
    Students and workers started an uprising in order to gain rights: personal freedom, more food, removal of the secret police, and removal of Russian control. This lead to the fall of the economy of Czechoslovakia.

    Russia Invades Afghanistan

    On Christmas in 1979, Russia invaded Afghanistan. Since the country was already in a civil war, Russia was not met with much resictance. The Afghanistan Muslims joined sides with the Russians, both were trying to overthrow the Amin government. On the 27th, Amin was killed and replaced by Kamal. Kamal needed help from the Russians. This lead to a war between the guerrillas and the Russians. This war lead to the USA putting a ban on the export of grain from Russia.
