This stage happens at 0-18 months old in which the infant relies on their caregivers to provide for them. With warm, gentle and loving caregivers, infants feel safe and learn to trust the people and environment around them. However, with harsh, inconsistent and unresponsive caregivers the infant will become fearful or resentful of the world and those around them.

This stage happens between the ages of 13-20 years old and allows adolescence to try new things and explore in life to better understand what suits them and their beliefs. If the adolescent is successful in finding their place, goals, people or role in life then they can enter the next stage with a sense of control. However, if the adolescent is not as successful in finding what suits them and who they are, it can often lead to a state of confusion.

This stage happens between the ages of 40-65 years old, hen people are able to contribute to society. People who are building a family, helping their community or succeeding in their career often feel happy and valuable to society. However, people who may not have fixed some issues in previous stages, or may not be as involved and interested in the world around them tend to feel stagnate.
