Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858. He went to school at Harvard. He was the governor until he became the vice president. He was the 25th vice president until the president was assassinated he took over. Once he took over they captured a bear for him to shoot. He said no and refused to kill the bear. That's how the teddy bear got its name. He also became the 25th president.
Theodore Roosevelt had four kids. But he sadly died in 1919 due to coronary embolism. -
Chicago Fire
On October 8th 1871 a fire broke out in Chicago. The whole town was made of wood and was a huge fire hazard. The fire ended up killing 300 people and left a ton of people homeless. Burning down 3.5 square miles of buildings. This has impacted America to make towns with safer materials other than wood. -
Skyscrapers
Skyscrapers were first made in 1884. The first one ever was 10 stories tall. It is located in Chicago. For a long time it was the tallest building in the world. It is called the Father Of Skyscrapers. This has changed America by being the first of many tall buildings to come. -
Statue Of Liberty
The French made the Statue Of Liberty for the United States as a gift. They first started to build it in 1883. In 1884 they finished building the statue and gave it to the U.S. on June 17th 1885. -
Chicago World Fair
In 1893 Chicago they held a big fair. They introduced tons of new inventions such as the dishwasher, juicy fruit gum, cracker jack, the zipper, Ferris wheel, spray paint, squashed pennies and many more. All of these impacted America because you still see all of these inventions being used everyday. -
Newsies Strike
In New York newsies were people who sold newspapers for more expensive than they are to make a profit. The newspaper company decided to make it more expensive for newsies to buy so they could make more money. The newsies were very mad and stopped buying them until they lowered the prices again. -
Food & drug administration
The Food and Drug Administration was created in 1906. It was created to prevent bad things from being in the food we eat. It impacts America today by making sure all of our food is safe to eat. -
National Parks
National Parks were created in 1906. Theodore Roosevelt created them because he loved nature and wanted places that wouldn't be built on top of. He wanted people to be able to enjoy nature so, national parks were made so that they cant be built over and people can enjoy nature. This has impacted America so there's places to enjoy nature without anything in the way. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire
In March of 1911 in New York City there was the Triangle Shirtwaist Company and one day the building caught on fire. But the staircases were locked and the elevator broke down after taking four groups of people out. 146 died in the tragic event. This has impacted America by making safer and unlocked doors to staircases and not having just elevators. -
Titanic Disaster
The unsinkable Titanic set off into the ocean on April 10th 1912. The ship contained 2,240 passengers. But they didn't have enough lifeboats and they didn't have any binoculars for the people keeping watch. Then on April 15th 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg. For multiple hours people tried to escape but they didn't fill up the lifeboats enough. 1,496 people passed away in the disaster. This has changed America so people take more precautions on ships.
