Cunard first cruise line
Cunard were the first company to have a schedule/regular service from the UK to America. -
Steam ships introduced.
Steam ships were developed, which were made out of iron instead of wood. Ships like the great western were built to carry male cargo and passengers to America across the Atlantic ocean. People brought a one way ticket to migrate to a new country for a new life. It would take 10-14 days originally to get across the Atlantic, the ships were very slow and heavy. -
The SS great Britain introduced
The SS great Britain is famous for being the first shift with a propeller. Previous ships had a big paddle wheel. It is the first ship to also be made of iron and have a propeller so it was much faster than previous ships. The SS great Britain could get across the Atlantic ocean in a week in comparison to 14 days. -
First advertised cruise
The first advertised cruise's were P&O and Cunard. P&O began advertising cruises from Southampton to Gibraltar, Malta and Athens. Cunard was the first cruise line to advertise cruises transatlantic, from Southampton to new York. -
Signal light system introduced on ships
To make ships visible at night and in bad weather signal light systems were introduced. The white light on mast, green light on starboard and red on the port side, this was to make sure you knew which way the ship was facing and where it was heading to prevent collisions. -
Electricity introduced to ships
Steel started to be used to build ships, electricity was introduced, and people started having en suite bathrooms, so the luxury part of the ships were coming along. Servia was the first ship to be made of steel, with electrical lighting and en suites. -

Luxury ships introduced
Ships became more luxurious to cater for the super wealthy, they became a status symbol. They became very comfortable for people with money. Cruise ships were the way to travel across seas and if you had money you would do this on a luxury ship. -
First wireless communication created
This was important for ships to have as it allowed them to communicate with other ships to alert them to issues, or if they were in trouble they could call for help. The international signal for help is SOS this would be done using Morse code, and this would be what they used if they were in trouble. -
The titanic sank
The titanic was built to be the unsinkable ship because of how it was designed. After the titanic safety improved, they had to have enough lifeboats for the amount of people were carried. The titanic only had half the amount of lifeboats for the amount of people they had. -

Development and growth of summer package holidays to the 'med'
Cruise operators had yo adapt to compete with cheap holidays to Spain, Portugal and Greece. Modern ships started to be introduced, carrying more passengers and therefore bringing the cost of cruising down too more affordable levels to appeal to the mass market. This attracted new customers to book cruise holidays. The industry grew and started to see a rise in cruise companies & ships (40 cruise ships launched in the 1980's). Cruise lines like princess cruises offered casual style cruises. -
QE2 is launched
It was the worlds most famous luxury ship for at least 50 years. It was the first big Atlantic liner with private facilities in every cabin. It was the first cruise liner to have bathrooms in every cabin. -
cruise company intergration
Carnival cruises launched in 1972. They are now the worlds largest integrated cruise company. In 2003, P&O princess cruises merged with carnival cruises to to form carnival corporation. The reason they merged is because carnival was based in America and most of there cruises were American and Caribbean based, P&O were based in the UK and there cruises travelled through Europe, so merging together they increased their market share. -
Ocean village launched
Ocean village offered cruises for people who like doing what they want without anyone watching, they were relaxed and to have fun. They advertise as 'the cruise for the people who don't like cruises'. They are cheap and not posh, they are more for younger people who want to party and relax. They were run by P&O cruises and lasted 8 to 9 years. They started a new type of cruise and then everybody else followed. -
Oasis class ships launched
An oasis class ship can hold over 4000 passengers and crew. In 15 years they have doubled in size and now can hold 8000. They go through a lot of testing because of how large they are. These cruise ships make cruising a thing majority of people can do as they are more affordable, because of how many people can travel on them the prices are lower. -
Ventura
The maximum capacity of passengers this ship could carry is 3,597. And the weight limit is 116,017 GT. The Ventura ship is a grand class cruise ship and is apart of the P&O fleet. Ventura can accommodate 3,192 passengers, and has 1,550 cabins, of which about 60% possess private balconies. It has fourteen public decks, eight restaurants, six boutiques, five pools and three show lounges, including a theatre -
Multi-generational families
Cruises are being marketed as the perfect holiday for grandparents, parents and kids to take together because they can pursue different activities on-board. More and more families are going on cruises together because there is something to do for everyone. NCL Cruise Lines have stated ' between 15 and 20% of their guests are are part of a multigenerational group' & carnival cruise's state 'more than half of our bookings involve more than one state room, no doubt many booked by families groups'. -
Virgin cruises launched
Virgin cruises launched in 2014 and rebranded as Virgin voyages in 2016. They specialise in adults only cruises and are part of the virgin group of companies. They are vertically integrated because they own cruises, airlines, tour operators. -
MSC Virtuosa launched
The MSC Virtuosa is a cruise ship owned by MSC Cruises. It was launched in 2019 and delivered in 2021. The ship sails from Southampton and Dubai, and can accommodate 6,334 passengers and 1,704 crew members. The gross tonnage is 181,541. There are 2421 staterooms on board. There are 4 swimming pools, 9 Jacuzzis, and 32 elevators on board. There are also 12 dining options on board. One of the main attractions of the ship is the large water park that is connected to an indoor amusement park. -
cost of living bites
Cruise ship demand has not gone down even though people have less disposable income. Cruises have had to offer better package deals so they are more affordable. They have also offered more from Southampton because that means they don't have to get a flight as well, so therefore its cheaper. -
Increases in demand post covid
People were sick and tired of not being able to travel during covid, in 2022 when the industry opened back up again there was big demand for cruises as people wanted to get out and start travelling again. Cruises lines were forced to reveal their 2023 itinerary due to the increased demand. In 2021 the cruise industry welcomed almost 13.9 million passengers worldwide. However this is still only 46% of p[passengers who cruised in 2019.
