  • Yalta Conference

    source The Yalta Conference took place from Feb. 4-11 in 1945. The Yalta Conference took place so President Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, & Joseph Stalin could discuss & make the important decisions needed for the war and the future of the world, post-war. At the conference, they agreed to order Germany's surrender & begin their plans for life after WW2. Effects were Europe was divided into two since Stalin was a miscreant.
  • Berlin Declaration

    Berlin Declaration
    souce The Berlin Declaration was the official declaration connecting to the defeat of Germany. The declaration confirmed the division of Germany into 4 separate sections. The effect of 5his declaration was that it is what basically made Germany surrender because that was the agreement.
  • Postdam Conference

    Postdam Conference
    source The Postdam Conference was held from July 17-August 2 in 1945. It included President Truman, British Prime MInister Winston Churchill, & Soviet Prime Minister Jospeh Stalin. This was the last meeting of WW2. At this meeting, they decided to issue a declaration ordering Japan to surrender. They also agreed on things like land boundaries & reparations. The effects were that the bomb was dropped on Japan.
  • North Vietnam

    source North Vietnam, also know as, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, followed the socialist state. NV was founded in 1945. The Viet Minh, aka, the League for Independence of Vietnam, shared the power of Vietnam with non-communists. These two together controlled parts of North Vietnam.

    source The Iron Curtain Speech was delivered by British Prime MInister, Winston Churchill, on March 5, 1946, at the Westminister College in Fullton, Missouri. The purpose of his speech was so he could persuade people to get rid of it. The effect his speech gave was that it weakened the Iron Curtain. It helped people realize it was not a good thing, they should knock it down so people could be united.
  • First Indochina War

    First Indochina War
    source The First Indochina War started on December 19, 1946 in the French Indochina. It ended on August 1, 1954. The war was between French and Vietnam forces. This war had a variety of different groups, which included French Union Corps that were led by France, against the Viet Miah led by Ho Chi Minh. The fighting mostly took place in Northern Vietnam.

    source The Marshall Plan was made so countries being invaded by communists could fight back. What happened was most of the countries who were given money fought communism and prevented invasion. The impacts of this plan were that communism was not able to spread to other countries, and therefore helped the allies stay stronger than the communists.

    source The Containment Policy helped give aid to countries and organizations to prevent the spread of communism. The impact of this event helped slow down the spread of communism around the world.
  • Berlin Blockade

    souce The Berlin Blockade was when the Soviet Union tried to prevent the United States, Great Britain, and France from traveling to the areas of Berlin, which were occupied by the Soviet Union. It happened so the Soviets could try prevent others helping Berlin so they could take it over. The Berlin Blockade was successful, however only until the western powers sent the supplies needed to Berlin by the Berlin Airlift.

    souce During the Berlin Airlift, the western powers aided Berlin by air lifting the supplies they needed to them. It happened becuase the Berlin Blockade was preventing the U.S. from helping and sending supplies to Berlin. The impact of this event was that the western powers got the supplies needed to Berlin and it helped them.
  • NATO

    NATO
    source NATO, aka, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was established by the U.S., Canada, and many Western European Nations to give security against the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union however, didn't let NATO get to them. They along with the 11 communist nations there were, created the Warsaw Pact which was an antagonist allaince. Almost all of the European Nations established 1 of the 2 opposite camps.

    source On August 29, 1949, the Soviet UNion detonated their very first atomic bomb. It was a huge shock to the U.S. because they weren't expecting the Soviet Union to have knowledge of nuclear weapons so quickly. In the past, the U.S. had used atomic bombs on Japan, which was what made them surrender in WW2. This test the Soviets were doing made Americans question their safety.
  • People's Republic of China Founded

    People's Republic of China Founded
    source The People's Republic of China was created because of the communist party's victory agianst the Kuomintang Party. The chairman of the communist party was Mao Zedang. Mostly peasants made up the party, they claimed to be at 4.5 million. The Soviet Union was the main defender of China during the time. The other countries were defended by the Western Allies, whose head was the U.S.
  • Second Red Scare

    source The Red Scare was hysteria over the percieved threat posed by communists in the U.S. As the Cold War became more intense between the Soviet Union and the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s the hysteria increased. The Red Scare led to a range of actions that had a profound effect on the U.S. government and also the society. Federal employees were analyzed to see if they were loyal to the government.
  • Korean War-American Involvement

    source The Korean War began when North Korea invaded South Korea. A couple days later President Truman ordered the U.S. forces to go and help South Korea. The United Nations also sent their troops to help the American troops. They were commanded by General Douglas MacArthur. SInce the North Amercan was a surprise, the U.S. and S.K. forces were pushed to the far corner of Southern Korea.
  • Julius and Ethel Rosenberg

    Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
    source Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were a married couple who were convicted in 1951 because they were spies. Julius was arrested in July of 1951. Ethel was arrested in August of 1951. They were accused of being the head of a spy ring that passed top secret information to the Soviet Union that was about the atomic bomb. They were put to death by the electric chair.
  • Nikita Khrushchev

    Nikita Khrushchev
    source Nikita Khrushchev lead the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. He served as a premier from 1958-1964. He lead a peaceful time with the west. He started the Cuban Missile Crisis when he put nuclear weapons in Cuba. He started a process in which the Soviet society became less repressive & more free. He could only be authoritarian in his own right. He also approved the building of the Berlin wall.
  • Eisenhower Presidency

    source Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th preident. He was in office from 1953-1961. He was a 5 star general in the U.S. army during WW2. He is responsble for the successful invasion of France and Germnay in 1944 from the western front. In 1951 he became the first supreme commander NATO.

    source Coup 53 of Iran was the central intelligence agencies first victorious displace of a foreign governement. The secret history of the coup which was with held by the CIA, surfaced, it revealed the reasoning which set the stage for the Islamic Revolution in 1979, for a generation of anti-American hatred in 1979 in the middle east's most powerful countries. This shows what role British intelligence played in planning this.
  • Warsaw Pact

    source The Soviet Union and 7 of its European Satelites signed a treaty that established the Warsaw Pact. It was a mutual defnese organization which put the Soviet Union in charge of the military of member states. The Warsaw Pact was signed in Warsaw. It invloved the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria as its members.
  • Suez Crisis

    source The Suez Crisis was an invasion of Egypt that occured in 1956 by Isreal, Britain, and France. The reason for this invasion was to recover western control of the Suez Canal and to extract Egyptian President Nasser from power. After the battle had begun, the U.S., Soviet Union, and the United Nations forced the removal of the three invaders.
  • Hungarian Revolution

    source In 1956, the Hungarian Revolution started. It was a rebellion against the government of the Hungarian's repiblic and the Soviet-imposed policies. It was the first big and real threat to the Soviet control since the USSR's forces drove out the Nazis at the end of WW2 and engaged in Eastern Europe. Regardless of the failure of the uprising, it was extremely influencial and hinted at the fall of the Soviet Union.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik Sputnik was the first artificial Earth satelite. It was launched by the Soviet Union in October of 1957. It was visible all around the Earth and its radial pulses were detectable. The surprise success began the American Sputnik Crisis. Sputnik started the space race. It was part of the larger cold war. It also brought new political, military, technological, and scientific developments.
  • Cuban Revolution

    source The Cuban Revolution occured in Cuba from 1956-1959. It was organized by Castro's July 26th movement, and also its allies against the U.S. who backed the Cuban President's government. The revolution began in 1953. It ended in 1959, when the rebels kicked out the President. They also replaced the government with a socialist state government. Cuba was later turned to a communist state.
  • U2 Incident

    U2 Incident
    source In 1960, there was an event with a U2. It happened during the Cold War. It also happened to be during the time where Eisenhower was president. A U.S. U2 spy plane as shot and it went down, because it was in the air space which happened to belong to the Soviets. The plane was being flown by a CIA pilot and it crashed. The U.S. government tried to cover up the reason why the plane was spying, but told the reason later on.
  • Kennedy Presidency

    source John F. Kennedy was the 35th President. He was elected in 1960. he was also the youngest and also the first Catholic President to ever sit in office. He served in the U.DS Congress and also the Senate. Kennedy tackled building the Cold War tensions in Cuba, Vietnam, and other countries. He also strived for public service and he was all for the civil rights movement, which was already growing.
  • Bay of Pigs

    source The Bay of Pigs was an invasion of Cuba which was planned by the CIA in 1961, which unfortunately failed. This particular military group was being funded by the CIA and was planning on overthrowing the communist government of Cuba. The attempt was first tried from Guatemala. CIA force was detected by the 3rd day by the Cuban forces.
  • First Man in Space

    First Man in Space
    source Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin was the first man who was able to travel into space. During the flight, the 27 year old comonaut was the first man to go around the planet. It took him 89 minutes. After his historic achievement, Gagarin became a world known celebrity instantly. This achievement of the Soviet Space program was an amazing blow to the U.S. because they wanted to be the first in space.
  • Checkpoint Charlie

    Checkpoint Charlie
    source Checkpoint Charlie was one of the main symbols of the Cold War. It symbolized the separation between the east and west. For almost 30 years this checkpoint not only portrayed a divided Germany, but also a world that was in politcal turmoil. Checkpoint Charlie got its name from the phonetic alphabet. By 1962, this checkpoint was the only place where foreigners who were visiting from Berlin could cross.
  • Berlin Wall

    Berlin Wall
    source The Berlin Wall divided Berlin from 1961-1989. It was built by the German democratic republic in August of 1961. It cut off West Berlin from East Germany, and from East Berlin until it was reopened in November of 1989. The destruction of the wall began in 1990, it was over in 1992. The wall was put up to prevent East Germans from leaving.
  • JFK Assassination

    source John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States. He was shot and killed at roughly 12:30 pm on Friday November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was shot by a snipper while sitting in the back of a convertible presidential motorcade, with his wife. The man who shot and killed him, was named to be Lee Harvey Oswald. Kennedy's death was the 4th time a President of America had been killed.
  • Gulf of Tulkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tulkin Resolution
    source The Gulf of Tulkin Resolution gave permission from the Congress to expand the Vietnam War. In 1964, during the spring time, planners for the military had established a detailed design for attacks on the north. President Johnson, feared that there would be no public support for an expansion. By summer time, rebel forces took control of almost half of South Vietnam.

    source The United States stat=rted making air raids on North Vietnam and also on communist controlled areas in the South of Vietnam. By 1966, there were about 190,000 U.S. troops in South Vietnam. North Vietnam was getting help from the Soviet Union military and other communist countries.   • SALT 1

    SALT 1
    source SALT, or Strategic Arms Limitation Talks was the day Nixon was inagurated for the first time. The Soviet Union government proposed to have the negotiations on the issues of nuclear arms controlled. Nixon instantly took it and the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks were presented. SALT took place in 2 parts. From 1969-1972 SALT 1 was executed. It started the missile treaty, that was between the U.S. and the Soviet public
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    source One of the biggest military operations of the Vietnam War by the forces of the North versus the South, was the Tet Offensive. It was a crusade of surprise attacks against military and civilian orders and control centers throughout South Vietnam. The offensive's name comes from the Tet holiday, the Vietnamese New Year, which is when the first attack occured.
  • Prague Spring

    source Prague Spring was an event that took place in 1968 when the politics of Czechoslovakia were momentarily liberalized because of sweeping reforms. In response, the Soviet Union strictly punished the Czechoslovakian government. The Soviet Union took over the country. This has historical interest because it marks a period of protest and decent againts the Soviet Union.

    source Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States. He is the only president to ever step down while still in office. Half way through his secomd term as president in 1974, he resigned due to the fact that he didn't want to deal with an impeachment because he tried to hide illegal activites of members of his administartions in the water gate scandal.

    source The main purpose of the Apollo 11 was to conclude a national goal, which was set by President Kennedy. The goal was to have an American land on the moon, and then return back. Apollo 11 took off from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969. Inside was Neil Armstrong and the people helping him. About 500 million people watched Armstrong on a tv and they listened to him describe what was going on as he took the first step on to the moon.
  • Iranian Revolution

    source The Iranian Revolution refers to the overthrowing of the Pahlari dynasty under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. He wa supported by the U.S. The Shah left for exile on January 16, 1979, he was the last persian monarch. He left his duties to a regency council and an oppositon based prime-minister. The royal reign collapsed when guerillas and rebel troops overwhelmed troops loyal to the Shah in armed street fighting. It brought Khormeini back.
  • Iran Hostage Crisis

    The Iran Hostage Crisis occured after the revolution when they overthrew the Shah. A massive demonstration happened in the street in front of the U.S. embacy. The public attacked the embacy & took all the employees/offiicials hostage. Officials were also at the IFM & they were taken. The hostages were kept for 1 year. When Regan was inaugurated, the hostages were released. This occured because it was in protest towards the U.S. policies for Iran. Most demonstrators were swayed toward hardliners
  • Tiananmen Square Massacre

    Tiananmen Square Massacre
    source The Tinananmen Square Massacre was a protest which occured in 1989. They were well known demonstrations, lead by students in Bejink, these occured in the spring time in 1989. It did get support from people. The protests were ended forcibly the leaders who ordered armed forces to execute the Marshall Law in the country's capital. Armed forces used rifles and tanks to kill many civilians.

    source In 1989, the Berlin Wall which was the barricade that divided East and West Germany was knocked down. The falling of the Berlin Wall sparked a change around the world because they used the Berlin Wall for a symbol of the Cold War. The barrier dividing East and West getting knocked down was an astonishing moment for a lot of Germans. The picture of Germans standing at the top of the wall is in the minds of people everywhere.

    source The Dissolution of the Soviet Union was presented on December 26, 1991. It recognized the independece of the Soviet Republics and established the common wealth of independent states. On the day before, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev stepped down from office and appointed the power of the Soviet Union to Borris Yeltsin.
