    Quebec Padlock law
    -The Padlock Law was an act of Quebec passed on March 24, 1937 by Maurice Dupplessis, the Premier of Quebec.
    - The law gave the Attorney General powers, so he would get aggressive on people he hated, such as jews.
    - Under Attorney Generals authority, he was able to close down any meeting or group related to Coummunism.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    Gouzenko Affair
    • Igor Gouzenko was assigned to the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa in 1943.
    • After a while, he learned that he and his family were going to be sent back to Russia
    • While he was working in Embassy, he learned some facts about Russian spys and turned them into Canadian Government for permanent protection
    • He and his family now live under new identities
  • Berlin Blockade "Iron Curtain"

    Berlin Blockade "Iron Curtain"
    • There was a boundary called "Iron curtain" which devided europe countries into two where half is allied side and half is Russian side.
    • Blocked any kind of movements between Western and Eastern Europe.
  • NATO (International Alliances)

    NATO (International Alliances)
    • NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was created for fear of Soviet Union spreading communism all over the world.
    • After, Warsaw Pact was created to go against NATO.
    • NATO and Warsaw Pact began to store nuclear weapons
    • Canadian government refuses to get nuclear in their hands in 1962.
  • The Korean war - "The Forgotten War"

    The Korean war - "The Forgotten War"
    • 1950, June 25th, Communist North Korea supported by Communist China invaded South Korea.
    • US decided to support South Korea
    • Only 16 members of UN helped the war effort in South Korea under American influence.
    • The UN ensured South Korea's independence after the war
    • Over 6 million Korean people gets killed during war
    • Ends with Armstice in 1953
  • Vietnam War, Draft Dodgers

    Vietnam War, Draft Dodgers
    • The war between North Vietnam against South Vietnam.
    • More than 3 million casualties over half of them being Vietnam civilians.
    • Draft dodgers (People who were against/refused to be conscripted)
    • 1975, war ends. Victory towards Communist North Vietnam.
  • The Suez Crisis

    • Egypt, Suez Canal, waterway connecting Mediterranean and Red Seas were taken over by Egyptian leaders.
    • Britain and France lost control over the Egypt region.
    • Israeli foreces, French forces, English forces attacked Egypt to regain the control of Suez Canal.
    • Canada provided 800 soldiers to this matter.
  • Sputnik and Canada's Space Program

    Sputnik and Canada's Space Program
    • Soviet Union has successfully launced the first artificial satellite in 1957, named Sputnik.
    • Sputnik was size of a beach ball.
    • Sputnik took 98 minutes to orbit arount the earth.
    • This huge world wide event led to creation of NASA led by United States and Canada's space program.
    • Canada's first sattelite was launced on 1962, named Aloutte
  • Pearson Wins Nobel

    Pearson Wins Nobel
    • Lester. B. Pearson was awarded Nobel Prize for solution of Suez Crisis in 1957. Which led to him becoming Prime Minister in 1963.
    • Huge honor for Canada.
  • Continental Alliances: NORAD and DEW

    • Military technology improved rapidly in the 1950's with the development of long range missiles.
    • Military technology advancement led to The North American Air Defence (NORAD) to be signed between Canada and Unites States to defend each other.
    • After that, there were some American defence installations
  • Avro Arrow and its cancellation

    • Avro Arrow was developed by Canadians
    • It was Jet aircraft which were designed to be interceptors.
    • It was great plane but in order to keep it going it had to cost a lot. So Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker cancelled it ending up with thousands of Canadians unemployed.
  • Nuclear warheads, Millisle, and Diefenbaker

    • John diefenbaker won the election of 1958 and became the Prime Minister of Canada.
    • Diefenbaker cancelled Avro Arrow project and switched to American made Missiles and Nuclear warheads.
    • Nuclear warheads weren't allowed in Canada
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    • Cuba is in location where they could hit any major cities in North America accurately.
    • US President J.F.Kennedy enforced naval blockade around the island to stop from other countries from giving cubans missiles and nuclear warheads.
    • The Canadian government requested to investigate all the site that might hold missles.
    • As US blocks all the naval activity, Soviet ships who didn't make it into Cuba had to turn around.
  • Canada vs Soviet Hockey Series

    Canada vs Soviet Hockey Series
    • Canadians were certain that no other countries in Europe can beat ther NHL hockey players.
    • So they brought in the best Russian hockey players vs a Canadian team in NHL.
    • Russians almost defeated Canadian team but at the end, Paul Henderson scored and broke the tie so the series would go to Canada.
  • The Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The Fall of the Berlin Wall
    • Communism in Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia began to weaken as Soviet Unions effect went down.
    • As Soviets Communism didn't effect German government anymore, East German government official announced that the borders were open.
    • People began to chop off the berlin wall and kept them as souvenirs.
    • East and West Germany reunited in 1990, Oct 3rd
  • The Fall of The Soviet Union

    The Fall of The Soviet Union
    • The Communist Party president Mikhail Gorbachev tried to speed up and develop the economy as their arms race in the west failed.
    • He asked for help to US President Ronald Reagan to resolve conflicts between them and other countries.
    • The Soviet Union was officially decimated in 1991.
