    This was the second meeting of the Cold War. The United States, United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union were represented by Roosevelt, Truman, and Stain. Germany was demilitarized and other important things were decided.

  • Marshal Plan- 1947

    Also known as the European Recovery Plan, the Marshall Plan was designed to fix war-torn Europe. It Included 13 billlion dollars for help with the recovery. George Marshall recieved a Nobel Peace prize for all of his work.
  • Truman Doctrine

    President Truman of the United States proposed to help Greece and Turkey by sending them 400,000,000. This would help them fight against the Communist. It also stated that the United States would provide support for all countries threatened by Communists.
  • Berlin Airlift-1948

    The Soviet Union created a blockade preventing West Germany from recieving supplies. The Western powers responded by flying supplies to West Germany.
  • USSR Atomic Bomb- 1949

    The Soviet Union built this bomb in secret and later shocked the world. This was dangerous because the scene was being set for a major battle.
  • NATO- 1949

    Everyone wanted protection, so Belgium, Luxemberg, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Iceland, Canada, and the U.S. signed a treaty agreeing to help one another if one of them was attacked.
  • Korean War Begins- 1950

    June 25 1950, North Korea attacked South Korea. America supported South Korea and the Soviet Union supported North Korea.
  • Rosenberg Spy Case- 1951

    The Rosenbergs were convicted of selling American atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union and were killed. There was controversy over this conviction.
  • East German Uprsing- 1953

  • Korean War Ends- 1953

    Frie ceased in the Korean War when North Korea, China and the U.S. signed an armistice.
  • Warsaw Pact- 1955

    Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union joined together in this millitary alliance.
  • Nikita Khrushcev- 1955

    Became the new leader of the Soviet Union in 1955 and continued the arms race with the U.S.
  • Hungarian Uprising- 1956

    Student protested Stalinism and demanded democratic elections. Hungary conceded two days later.
  • Sputnik- 1957

    Fears spread in America when the Soviets sent this first human made spacee satellite into Earth's orbit. Americn feared that they were falling behind in the arms race.
  • U2 Incident- 1960

    Francis Gary Powers was shot by the Soviet Unoin when taking pictures of Russian territory.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion- 1961

    President Kennedy allowed Cuban Exiles to invade Cuba to attept to start a revolt. The plan failed because many were killed or captured at the Bay of Pigs.
  • Berlin Wall (building)- 1961

    The wall was built to stop people from leaving East Germany because they were tired of the Communist repression.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis- 1962

    The failed attempt at the Bay of Pigs caused the Soviet Union to send arms to Cuba. Later, Khrushchev started to place nuclear missles in Cuba to intimidate the U.S. and counteract their missles in Turkey.
  • Prague Spring- 1968

    Alexander Dubcek was elected first secretary of the Communist Party and promised gradually make Czechoslovakia a democracy. He made reforms such as freedom of speech and freedom of press and this happy period of time was made.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev Comes to Power- 1985

    Gorbachev wanted radical reforms such as reconscructing econimic policy. He also created the Congress of People's Deputies and a state of presidency to strengthen his power.
  • German Unification- 1990

    The cruelruling of Erich Honecker cuase the citizen of East Germany to want to leave. When the borders finally opened up people went in to West Germany. The Communist Party had to surrender it's power. When East Geermany had its first free elections, Christian Democrats won the majority of the vote and had the Germanys reunified.
