    The Marshall plan, basically a stimulus package got the USA back on it’s feet quickly and lead to the strong selling points of the US which was their ability to create consumer goods quickly and effectively, comparing to the Soviets failure to make any industrial domestic products. Just look at the Russian’s terrible automotive technology today multiply by ten and you have Soviet Union.

    The Soviets installed a blockade of west Berlin, so the US and it’s allies just airlifted food and supplies enough to last the winter.
  • Israeli-Palestinian Truce

    Israeli-Palestinian truce. This fight was an example of a Proxy War- a war instigated by a major power that does not itself participate. During the cold war this was common because the two superpowers (United States and Soviet Union) did not want to fight each other directly since it would have caused a nuclear war.

  • Divided Germany

    Between 49 and 61 over 3.5 million East Germans migrated to the Western side, many of them young, skilled workers. This was a huge embarrassment for the communist leaders, so they divided Germany with barbed wire, mine, guards, and eventually a wall. France, the US, and the UK didn’t do anything since they were scared of it escalating into a full war.

This was a good indication of the start of the Iron Curtain (an ideological conflict and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas) in which the East tries to shield itself from the west and the capitalist philosophies but this actually went both ways.

    Senator Joseph McCarthy tried to expose communists in the USA basically a mirror of the policies of containment. Radicals lost jobs and reputation and a push for family life was implemented.

    Korea split along the 38th parallel between the communist soviets in the North and the democratic US in the South
  • Korean Back and Forth

    Pyongyang regime wanted to unify and marched into SK and pushed them back to their capital Seoul. Well the US managed to convince the UN that this was a communist push and within two weeks, with combined forces, they pushed NK back to Pyongyang. China got mad and pushed the US and it’s allies back.
  • Nassar's Coup

    Nassar the soon to be president of Egypt stages a bloody coup in which King Farouk is forced to leave the throne. He wished to stay non aligned however he let the US and Soviets give him money in fake pushes of alignment. This practice of non alignment was called Third World although today it has a different meaning.

    A secret Kikuya society known as Mau Mau embarked on a violent campaign against Europeans and African traitors. The Mau Mau tried to seize power, but almost no one wants them and the British declare a state of emergency and step in.

    Both sides (North and South Korea) agreed to a ceasefire at the 38th parallel; however no peace treaty was ever signed to end the war.

    The Southeast Asian Treaty Organization which was a counterpart of NATO. The basic aims were to stop the spread of communism.

    Peace conference in Gineva tries to unify the two Vietnams along the 17th parallel, with the north controlled by Ho Chi Minh and the communists, while the south was in the hands of non communists.
  • Domino Theory

    President Eisenhower accepted the principles of the domino theory, which states that if one state became communist the rest would soon become communist also. This justified US interference in Asian/ European countries.
  • Brown vs. the Board of Education

    The famous Brown vs. the Board of Education ruled segregation is schools illegal however it wasn’t until later that it actually became illegal as a result of activists such as MLK Jr.

  • Bandung Conference

    The leaders of new African and Asian countries first discusses non alignment at the Bandung Conference. Wanted a third path, and alternative to choosing between the Soviet Union and the United States. Also the prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru was a defender of non alignment. Failure since there was no unification and a state was inevitable more or less aligned with either the US or Soviet Union.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Then as a response to NATO, the Warsaw Pact was enacted. This was also called the Warsaw Treaty Organization of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance (1955–1991), more commonly referred to as the Warsaw Pact. This is basically a treaty between 8 communist states.
  • France Granted Independence

    France granted independence to its colonies in Morocco and Tunisia to focus its attention on Algeria.
  • Nassar Monatized the Suez Canal

    Nassar monatizes the Suez Canal and pisses allot of people off. British, French, and Israeli forces take the canal easily and Soviets try to stop it and develop a reputation of Arab nationalism and anti-imperialism. The US condoned the actions of the British, French, and Israelis because it was a dumb diplomatic move because now allot of Asian countries are not the biggest fans of the US and it’s allies.
  • Ghana Became Independent

    Ghana became independent which was a result of black nationalism and a strive for African independence. Nkrumah was the leader of the first free African State to gain independence. This motivation came in the form of songs and poems. Infact later huge pictures of the Nkrumah and the queen were erected. Independence Of Angola and Zimbabwe came later.
  • Fidel Castro Comes to Power

    Fidel Castro comes to power, with speeches and rallies of how the country a former “satellite state” of the US, of whom they were heavily dependent on sugar consumption. Castro steps in, overthrew Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar and the US cuts sugar imports.

Some of his policies were viewed as as erratic) and Nixon argue fundamental differences in policy. Nixon and the US were exhibiting a house which he claimed any American could afford. Furthermore arguments on the role of women and other problems were discussed.

    The Soviet Union had developed had become equal to the power of the US in terms of nuclear and thermonuclear power.

    Cuba under their new leader is in economic hardship and the Soviets give them a life raft, which Castro gladly accepts. He openly supports the USSR’s foreign policy.
  • Berlin Wall

    Nikita Khrushchev approved the East germans to build the Berlin Wall, to stop the flow of East Germans to the West.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs, an attempt to cause internal uprising by the CIA and Authorized by John F. Kennedy completely failed. US prestige in the area is now down and this might have been the open door, the Soviet’s needed to step in with their missiles.
  • I Have Been a Marxist-Leninist All Along

    Castro says “I have been a Marxist-Leninist all along, and will remain one until I die.” This solidifies the American’s fear of both the spread of communism and the possible impending doom.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Two years before the crisis, Fidel Castro Ruz overthrew the regime that had gone to great lengths to maintain a relationship with the U.S. Castro exiled thousands of political opponents imposing an export embargo of U.S. goods on Cuba. At this point, because of loosening ties between Cuba and U.S., the Soviet Union stepped in to purchase half of Cuba’s sugar production.     The Feminine Mystique was published which once again signified feminist discontent with the the female role and the idealized female role. The ideal role was for a family mom however this was far from true and women at the time were actually working more than they ever had even more than the total war of WW2.

    The book The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, highlighted how to different political systems had become similar and how both sides had forgone their morality. There were however still fundamental differences in beliefs and ideologies of both sides.

    Following Eisenhower's policy of the domino theory, Lyndon Johnson increased American involvement in Vietnam. However the Viet Cong aka the NLF or national liberation front (communist in the south) stopped the massive effort and the best the US could do was a draw.
