  • Red Scare

    Red Scare
    The Red Scare was started by a clerk named Igor Gouzenko, when he walked out of the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, and defected. Igor was holding important documents when he left causing subversion within the Soviets. Subversion is when something is secretly weakening a society and overthrowing its government. U.S citizens feared this would happen to them, thus causing the Red Scare.
  • The United Nations

    The United Nations
    The United Nations were first used to replace the League of Nations. The main uses of the UN was to keep peace worldwide, stop war, and help in solving international economic, social and humanitarian problems. It was created during the Cold War and was deemed an international organization. One of its many jobs was to help Truman in the Korean War.
  • Truman Doctrine and Containment

    Truman Doctrine and Containment
    The Truman Doctrine was created by President Truman. He asked Congress for 400 million dollars to help Greece and turkey to fight off communism. Truman wanted Containment, which is keeping communism within its present territory through the use of diplomatic, economic, and military actions. Through the use of the Doctrine, Truman aided people that tried to resist communism. This later helped to stabilize Greece's government and had the United States pled to fight communism worldwide.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan created by Secretary of State George C. Marshall was made because Western Europe was in bad shape. It was to be used as a European Recovery Program and give European nations America's help to rebuild their economy. The Soviets refused our offer and went on to make their own plan but the Marshall Plan did weaken the spread of communism and increased trade.
  • Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)

    Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
    The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was created by President Eisenhower used to prevent communist uprisings in other countries. The CIA went all over and was in many developing nations. They staged covert operations to try and overthrow communist leaders. The CIA is still used today.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Berlin Airlift was an effect of the Soviet's cutting off road and rail traffic to West Berlin. The U.S still wanting to keep West Berlin alive needed to think of a peaceful way to get food and other supplies to Berlin. So for 11 months they used Aircrafts to supply Berliners with food, medicine and coal. This was until Stalin lifted up the Soviet's blockade on May 12th, 1949.
  • Iron Curtain

    Iron Curtain
    The Iron Curtain was a way of saying that Eastern Europe was divided. At first Soviets refused to make any stronger commitments to uphold the Declaration of Liberated Europe. But the Iron curtain didn't challenge that, it just separated the communist nations. This caused fighting with the United States and the Communist countries or Satellite nations.
  • Joeseph McCarthy

    Joeseph McCarthy
    Joseph McCarthy had a huge peak of fame starting in the 1940's. He was first the Senator of Wisconsin. Soon after, he began accusing innocent people of being communists. Back then many people were paranoid and would believe him and were happy to get the communists out. Joseph also made McCarthyism which is the damaging of reputations with vague and unfounded charges. McCarthy accused many of being communists but in 1954 people realized he had no proof to his accusations and stopped believing.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Communism soon spread to Korea but not all of it. It was split; the South being Anti-communist and the North being communist. The whole reason for the war starting was because the North wanted all of Korea to be unified but the South didn't want to be communist. So the United Nations and United States came over to help the South while in the North Russia and China came to help. The war was resolved later on July 27th, 1953.
  • Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was much like the Korean War. North Vietnam was communist nation while South Vietnam was anti-communist. The North wanted the country to be a whole again but the South didn't want to give into communism. So the U.S stepped in and helped out the South. They sent them money, weapons, and troops. This helped to end the War on April 30th, 1975.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    Sputnik is one of the Soviet Union's artificial satellites. It was launched on October 4th 1957 setting the United States back in the space race. This meant that the U.S was falling behind in missile technology. They didn't want people thinking that the Soviet's were better and then turning to them and also communism so Congress passed the National Defense Education Act (NDEA). This later made NASA.
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    The Space Race was a competition between The Soviet Union and The United States. When the Soviet's sent up Sputnik it got the U.S's attention. President Kennedy got worried. He thought that since the Soviet's sent up Sputnik it might make people believe communism is better. In turn this made Kennedy create NASA.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    The Bay of Pigs Invasion was on Cuba. It was started by Fidel Catro who overthrown the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Fidel then allied with the Soviets which made the U.S worry. So when the Cuban's landed on the Bay of Pigs the U.S tried to attack. Sadly their attempt failed because the boats ran aground on coral reefs, the air support was cancelled, and almost all the forces sent there were killed or captured by the end.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis started when America found out Soviet technology and equipment had arrived in Cuba. There were also missiles sent there which posed a threat to the U.S. Kennedy ordered that a naval blockade be built to stop the delivery of missiles. The Soviet's were angry but offered a deal. If they removed their missiles than America wouldn't invade Cuba and would covertly remove their Turkish missiles.
  • Hawks & Doves

    Hawks & Doves
    Once President Johnson was elected he was determined to keep fighting. He wouldn't stop until he had won. So the nations split into two camps. The Doves who were the people that wanted American's out of Vietnam. And the second group, Hawks who were people who wanted the American's to stay and fight in Vietnam. There was also a Comic Book made by DC Comics later on based on the two groupings.
