Berlin Blockade and Air Lift
The Soviet Union began the Berlin Blockade so that the allies would would leave after the WWII jurisdictions. Britannica quotes "Coincident with the introduction of a new deutsche mark in West Berlin (as throughout West Germany), which the Soviets regarded as a violation of agreements with the Allies, the Soviet occupation forces in eastern Germany began a blockade of all rail, road, and water communications between Berlin and the West." -
The Korean War
This war was faught between North and South Korea. With the help of the Soviet Union, North Korea invaded the South ending the war in millions of casualties. According to Britannica, "the fighting ended in July 1953 with Korea still divided into two hostile states. Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union, and many of its satellite countries made a pact that would keep the Soviets in command. According to History Channel, "he treaty called on the member states to come to the defense of any member attacked by an outside force and it set up a unified military command under Marshal Ivan S. Not only was there a spacce exploration become a huge competition in the Cold War, but also nuclear war threats were made. Sputnik Crisis
The Sputnik Crisis was the U.S. reaction to the Sputnik program. According to The Cold War, "It was a key Cold War event that began on October 4, 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite. The launch of Sputnik I rattled the American public. President Dwight D. Eisenhower referred to it as the “Sputnik Crisis”. (The Cold War) -
U-2 Spy Incident
This event took place when the a U.S.spy plane was shot down by the Soviet Union. This led to an awkard situation for the U.S. because the pilot was captured and the U.S. was forced to admit that there has been spy missions over the USSR. Acording to History Channel, "President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) was forced to admit to the Soviets that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had been flying spy missions over the USSR for several years." (History) -
Bay of Pigs
This event took place when the U.S. tried to push Fidel Castro out of power. Accroding to History Channel, "the CIA launched what its leaders believed would be the definitive strike: a full-scale invasion of Cuba by 1,400 American-trained Cubans who had fled their homes when Castro took over. Reagan visits the Wall
To keep the Germans from escaping, the Berlin Wall was built. Reagan visits the wall to give a memorable speech. According to the History Place, "The wall stood as a stark symbol of the decades-old Cold War between the United States and Soviet Russia in which the two politically opposed superpowers continually wrestled for dominance, stopping just short of actual warfare."( History Place) -
Berlin Wall Falls
The wall helped keep in Germans in the Cold War. There was many things that cortributed to the fall of the wall. Accroding to the U.S.A Today, "A mistake helped lead to the fall of the Wall. The flood of East Germans and West Germans to the Wall, which led to its ultimate collapse, came after East German Politburo member Guenther Schabowski on Nov. 9, 1989, mistakenly announced that East Germans would be allowed to cross into West Germany effective immediately, according to National Public Radio -
Cuban Missle Crisis
This events results in the closest the Soviets, and the U.S. to actually fighting. President Kennedy explained that the U.S. would do anything to protect against the threats made. The History Channel quotes, "disaster was avoided when the U.S. agreed to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s (1894-1971) offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba. Kennedy also secretly agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey."(History) -
NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY
This was a treaty about nuclear war. According to the Cold War, "an international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament." Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
The talk was the official negotiation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Mikhail S. Gorbachev made a positive impact on the Cold War. He made policies that would allow other countries to form their own government. According to the Cold War, "Gorbachev's revolutionary program swept communist governments throughout Eastern Europe from power and brought an end to the Cold War (1945-91). The largely political and economic rivalry between the Soviets and the United States and their respective allies that emerged following World War II was over." (Cold War) -
Reunited In Germany
This where East and west Germany reunited, East Germany was no longer Communist, and this was evidence that the War Saw Pact’s days were numbered. According to English Online, " Much progress has been made in the eastern part of Germany in the last 20 years. City and towns have been modernized. Most East Germans are better off than they were 20 years ago. Eastern Germany has become a home to new industries, especially in the fields of biotechnology and renewable energy." ( English)
