General William Sherman wanted to take Atlanta due to its manufacturing, supply, and, mainly, its railroads. In July of 1864, the Union won the Battle of Atlanta, which destroyed the Confederacy's defensive force and secured Atlanta under Union control.

The Battle of Atlanta was a battle a part of the Atlanta Campaign. General William Sherman sent three federal armies towards Atlanta, totaling over 100,000 men. Confederate General Joseph Johnston attempted to slow Sherman's advance with only 60,000 soldiers; however, they were ultimately defeated. Although there were high casualties on the Confederate side, Atlanta didn't fall to the Union until September. -
Sherman's March to the Sea was a campaign during the American Civil War that started in November of 1864 and lasted a month. William Sherman led his troops on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, which involved stealing livestock and food and burning down houses of rebels. -

Special field order no.15 was a wartime order that William Sherman issued. This promised black Americans a land plot, along with a mule per plot. This was known as 40 acres and a mule, but when Andrew Johnson became president, he repossessed the land. Kendrick Lamar referenced this during the Super Bowl LIX halftime show as a broken promise to Black Communities. -
