Frederick Douglass
Also an escaped slave Douglass became a leader of the abolitionist movement which fought to free slaves. He helped run the underground railroad and gave powerful speeches. He also advised President Lincoln during the civil war. -
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an escaped slaves who helped others to escape using the underground railroad. She made 13 missions which helped 70 enslaved people to escape. She also led a raid during the civil war which saved over 750 slaves and made her the first woman to lead a military raid. -

In this speech Frederick Douglass calls out the Americans who celebrate the fourth of July while also condoning slavery. He goes into detail on how this holiday is a sad reminder of the little freedom many have in this country. And he calls on people to see the constitution as a way to abolish slavery. -
Lincolns 2nd Inaugural address
Lincolns 2nd address was about uniting the people after the war. This war was about protecting the nation and destroying slavery. It was a very powerful and influential speech. -
Slavery Abolished
On this day the 13th amendment was created which freed all the slaves. This freed more than 100,000 enslaved people. This day became a holiday known as Juneteenth. -
Voting rights for Blacks 15th Admendment
15th Amendment was passed on this day which allowed anyone to vote regardless of their race or color. -
Brown V Board of Education
This was a supreme court case that made it so segregation in schools would no longer be a thing. This ruling overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson case in 1896 which ruled that it was separate but equal. This was historic as it desegregated schools across the country. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was a civil rights leader who is best known for her work during the Montgomery bus boycott. She refused to sit in the back and was arrested December 1st 1955. This caused outrage from the black community and the bus was boycotted by more than 20 thousand. -
Martin Luther King
Very famous civil rights leader who led many boycotts and protests. He is well known for his Montgomery buss boycott in 1955 and his march on Washington in 1963. That is where he made his famous "I have a dream" speech. -
Malcom X
Malcom X also a civil rights leader however he believed in different things than most at the time. He believed in Black Nationalism which meant separating themselves from white people and creating their own communities. He also believed in fighting against violence with violence. He was sadly assassinated February 21, 1965 before he was set to make a speech. -
A letter to my nephew by James Baldwin
This letter was a powerful message to the nephew of James Baldwin which told him the harsh reality of racism in the US. It tells him to stay proud and strong despite this. It also talks about how white people are ignorant to racism. -
March On Washington
This was one of the biggest civil rights demonstration/protest in US history. About 250,000 people attended. What they were advocating for were civil rights, fair wages, voting rights, education, and much more. This is where Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous "I have a dream speech". -
Civil rights act of 1964
This was a law passed that prohibited discrimination based on race,color,religion,sex and national origin. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed it. This act was influenced by Martin Luthers King's march on Washington.
