    Democritus

Democritus was the first scientist to create a model of the atom. He created the name atom from the Greek word atomos, which means uncuttable. 400BC
  • Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton proposed that all matter was a small solid mass in motion.
  • John Dalton

John Dalton agreed with Democritus’ model but added that all matter was made up of atoms. His theory latter help advanced the theory of an atom.
  • Robert Millikan

Robert Millikan performed an oil drop experiment that proved a state the J.J. Thompson made that electrons were 1000x smaller than the atom
  • Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford discovered the existence of the nucleus
  • H.G.J. Moseley

H.G.J Moseley discovered that the number of protons in an elements determines the atomic number
  • Erwin Schrödinger

Erwin Schrödinger generated a mathematical model for the distribution of electrons and protons in an atom
  • J.J. Thompson

J.J. Thompson was the first scientist to create a model that was not a solid ball. His model was called the plum pudding model.
