    Constructivism Theory

Constructivism emerges as a prominent learning theory. While much of the development in constructivism rapidly grew in the 1980’s, the development would coincide with the advancements and access of computers in the hands of students. In this educational theory, students gain knowledge through steps of action, reflection, and construction. A perfect pairing for the emerging computer advancements of the time.

    Cognitive Load Theory

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) began to be developed. While not published until the late 1980’s, this theory emerged in the 70’s as the advancements in technology affected students and facilitators. CLT is a model that describes how the brain processes information and then uses that to ensure students are not overloaded by maximizing the instruction. Source: West

    Distance Education Emerges
Distance education programs using technology, such as video conferencing, begin to develop. Satellite schools appeared and attempted to close the issues of distance and scarcity in education. Universities could also handle the issue of too many students and insufficient physical space while offering courses at a distance. The UK develops the Open University (pictured) in 1971.

Apple Computer Founding and Apple II Developed
Apple Computer Company is founded. The Apple Computer Company began designing technology for common households that were easy to use in both that they came pre-built and also the operating system was easier to navigate. The Apple II, a highly successful personal computer, is introduced the following year. Not only was this computer easier to use, it also was targeted at a relatively lower price.
  • Development of Videodisc Systems

The first interactive videodisc systems become available. DiscoVision was established, and while not wildly popular, it was the first time that movies (including educational documentaries) were available for home use.
