Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts to David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Poe. Both of Edgar's parents were actors.

Poe's mother died on December 8, 1811. Just one year prior to Elizabeth's death, his father passed away.

Poe attended Manor School at Stoke Newington from 1815-1820. It later became the setting for one of his stories "William Nelson."

In 1826, Poe became engaged to his cousin Elmira Royster, but her parents broke off the engagement.

From 1826-1827, Poe attended the University of Virginia. He was expelled for not paying gambling debts.

Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier in 1827. He joined under the name Edgar A. Perry. He was sent to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

In 1836 Poe married his 13-year-old cousin. Her name was Virginia Clemm.

In the years 1842-1843, Poe worked at Graham's Magazine. During his time at Graham's Magazine, he wrote some of his best-known stories.

Poe's dark poem of lost love,"The Raven", brought him national fame in 1845.

Poe was found in an unconcious state in a Baltimore gutter and died in the hospital on October 7, 1849. He was forty years old.
