Keats' grandmother handed over the financial care to Richard Abbey, however Abbey was decietful when handling money and it is estimated that by the time of Keats' death, Abbey had taken 2000 pounds away from him.

In 1811 Keats left Enfield to apprentice a respected surgeon, Thomas Hammond. He assisted Hammond and began the study of anatomy and physiology until 1814.
