Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel is born, March 2, in Springfield, Mass.
At six years old, Theodor is already a proficient reader, he enjoys Charles Dickens and Robert LouisStevenson.
Geisel begins studies toward a Ph.D. in English Literature at Oxford University’s Lincoln College wherehe meets classmate and future wife Helen Palmer. He leaves school without obtaining his degree totravel through Europe for two years.

Geisel moves to New York, marries Helen and sells his first cartoons to Judge magazine. To add professionalism and to save his real name Geisel uses the pen name, Dr. Theophrastus Seuss.
