Important Dates in the Life of St. Ignatius (and then some)

    Birth unto Earth

    Saint Ignatius was born Inigo Lopez in the year of 1491.
    In this same year were also born:
    King Henry VIII- an English Tudor monarch who separated the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church. Jacques Cartier- a French explorer that mapped the Lawrence River and claimed Canada for France.

    Wounded for Health

    In 1521, Ignatius was wounded in the Battle of Pamplona, and, in his recovery, decided to leave his "knightly" ways and follow Gods calling for him. What influenced him greatly was the book De Vita Christi by a man named Ludolf of Saxony. A fine model for his new way of life was St. Francis of Assisi.
    In this year, several other historical happenings took place:
    In the Philippines, Magellan dies in the Battle of Mactan. In the Battle of Tenochtitlan, the last Aztec emperor is defeat

    Second Exodus

    Ignatius arrives in the Holy Land (Jerusalem) but is later sent to return by Franciscan priests in 1523.
    Also occurring in this year:
    Clement VII becomes Pope. Catherine Howard is born. (she was the fifth wife of Henry VIII, by the way) The New Testament is translated into German by none other than Martin Luther.

    Rise of the Society

    1539- the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) was formed!
    Taking place with perhaps no relation but the year:
    Pigs arrive, for the first time, in North America (my favorite)! St. Charles Borromeo is born.

    Only the Beginning

    Ignatius fell to a case of Malaria (known as Roman Fever) on July 31, 1556.
    Departing from the material world this year as well were:
    About 830,000 Shaanxi Province citizens died in China during the largest earthquake in history. Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury is burned at the stake in Oxford.

    The Luna 1 Spacecraft is launched, successfully, by the Soviet Union. Alaska and Hawaii become the 49th and 50th states of the U.S.A. (or "U.S. of America" as former president George W. Bush would say). Second Vatican Council is officially announced. Sleeping Beauty is released by Walt Disney.
