Ian Hacking was born on February 18, 1936 in Vancouver, Canada.

He received has BA from the University of British Columbia in 1956.He then went to the University of Cambridge where he received his MA in 1958 and has PhD in 1962.

After he finished school Hacking began teaching. He has taught at several universities over the years.

1962-1964 - research fellow - University of Cambridge
1964-1969 - assistant/associate professor - University of British Columbia
1974-1982 - Stanford University
1983 - professor of philosophy - University of Toronto
2000- 2006 - held a chair of philosophy - College de France
2011- Visting professor - Cape Town -
2000 - Molson prize - top philosophers in the world
2002 - inaugural Killam prize for the humanities
2004 - named a companion of the order of Canada
2009 - Holberg international - scholarly work in arts and humanities
2012 - Austrian decoration for science and art
2014 - Balzan prize - distinguished scholars and scientists -

After many years teaching and writing Hacking finished his career as a visiting professor for the University of Cape Town. He is now 86 years old.
