In 1774, Thomas Jefferson retired from his law practice and turned his clients over to Edmund Randolph. Edmund practiced law until his death, although he did so only part-time while he held public office.

Edmund Randolph married Elizabeth Nicholas on August 29, 1776. Elizabeth raised their children and supported her husband through all his years of public service.

Edmund attended the convention that adopted Virginia's first state constitution in 1776. He was the convention's youngest member at age 23.

In 1777, Edmund and his wife Elizabeth had their first child, Peyton Randolph. Peyton would one day become the governor of Virginia.

Four days after the opening of the federal convention in Philadelphia, on May 29, 1787, Edmund Randolph presented the Virginia Plan for creating a new government.

After Thomas Jefferson resigned as Secretary of State, Randolph assumed that post for the years 1794-95.

After retiring from politics in 1795, he resumed his law practice and was regarded as a leading figure in the legal community.

When Aaron Burr went on trial for treason in 1807, Edmund Randolph acted as his senior counsel.
