William Henry Gates III was born on a cold night at ten o’clock p.m., in Seattle, Washington. His parents were Mary and William Gates Sr. He was a senior lawyer and she was an executive for a major bank. They were somewhat wealthy. At age 13, Gates attended the private Lakeside school. This is where he had his first introduction to computers. He taught himself to program. In 1973, Gates enrolled in Harvard University as a law major.

He, then, decided he didn’t want to and instead studied mathematics and computer science. He was more interested in pursuing his own coding and soon dropped out before even graduating. In 1976, Bill Gates and his friend, Paul Allan, found Microsoft. In 1980, IBM approached Microsoft for a new BASIC operating system. Microsoft worked hard to sell its operating system to other companies. It was able to gain the dominate position of software manufacturer.

In 1990, Microsoft released its first version of Windows. It replaced text interfaces with graphical interfaces. It became the best seller and was able to capture the majority of the operating system market share. In 1995, Windows ’95 was released. It had been the back bone for all future Windows 2000 and later models. In the time, Bill Gates had been doing numerous different jobs for Microsoft. In 1992, Bill Gates marries Melinda French. Gates later decides to step down from his job in 2002.

They had three children, Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe. Jennifer was born in 1996. Rory was born in 1999, and Phoebe was born in 2002. Bill and Melinda formed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. From 2008 and on, it is estimated that Bill and Melinda have given away $28 million through their charitable foundation. Bill Gates is still alive today.
