A Brief History of Ignatius and the Society of Jesus

Ignatius was believedto be born sometime before October 23rd in the year 1491. He was born in the Basque Region of Spain, and was the youngest of 13 children. He was born and Baptised under the name Inigo Lopez.

Ignatius was involved in multiple battles without sustaining any serious injury.

Ignatius begins to change his lifestyle. He leaves his uniform behind and begins living life by begging and praying.

Ignatius refuses to give up Pamplona despite their low odds of success. He sustains a cannonball injury to the legs, and undergoes many painful surgical procedures. While he is healing, he reads books on the life of Jesus and the saints.

He goes on a path of self denial and sacrifice. He is not permitted to stay in Jerusalem and returns to Spain. People begin to see his beliefs and his lifestyle and become followers.

200 pages spiritual excercises to be practiced over 28-30 days. He began writing them in 1522.

He died of Roman Fever, a form of Malaria.

Ignatius was canonized as the patron saint of the provinces of Guipuscoa and Biscay along with the Society of Jesus
