01/01/1860	Tensions	Tensions between the North and South. Indiana found itself in the middle of the states. So Hoosiers were divided over the issue of slavery.
11/01/1860	Abraham Lincoln, Elected	Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th U. S. President.
12/20/1860	Poor Old South Carolina	South Carolina was the first state to secede from the United States.
02/01/1861	A New Country	Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas had aslo seceded to make the Confeterates. Mississippi's Jefferson Davis became the first and only President of the Confederacy.
02/08/1861	Speeches, Oh Speeches	Abraham Lincoln said, "It is your business to rise up and preserve the Union and liberty for yourselves, and not for me... [B]ear in mind that with you... is the question: Shall the Union and shall the liberties of this country be preserved...?" to Indiana.
03/04/1861	President At Last	Abraham Lincoln is sworn in as U. S. President.
04/12/1861	War oh, War	The Civil War began when the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter, a Union fort in South Carolina.
04/20/1861	Not more States!	North Carolina, Arkansas, Virgina, and Tennessee joined the Confederacy.
06/03/1861	Indiana Time	Hoosier soldiers first saw action at Phillippi, Virgina.
02/01/1862	Fort Donelson	Many soldiers died trying to capture Fort Donelson.
09/22/1862	Emancipation Proclamation	President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that stated that as of Jan. 1 1863 it would free slaves in the rebelling Confederate areas.
07/08/1863	Morgan's Raid	John Hunt Morgan, a Confederate general stole Hoosier supplies and burnt bown biuldings.
04/09/1865	Surrender	The Confederate army was hopelessly outnumbered and were forced to surrender.
