Event Date: Event Title: Event Description:
Spacemonkey_small_square Monkey in Space The first monkey in space reached about 83 miles into Earth's atmosphere and died due t a paracheut impact. The reason they sent this monkey into space was to explore the effects of radiation exposure at high altitudes.
Sputnik%201_small_square Sputnik 1 Launch The launch of Sputnik 1 was a sucess and became the first rocket launched into space. This made communication in space possible for people on Earth.
Dog%20in%20space_small_square Dog in Space The first dog in space was a female stray dog that they named Laika. Laika's mission was to orbit Earth, but she died during the first few hours of the launch due to overheating. This taught scientists that they had to have the right temperature and it taught thm about the impact on spaceflight.
Satellite%20launch%20(us)_small_square 1st U.S. Satellite Successfully Launched The U.S. Army launched the first satellite which was the Explorer 1 using a rocket that had been created to test guide misselle components. This was important because without it scientists wouldb't have had been able to create more, so we would'nt have the technology we use now.
Nasa_small_square NASA Founded When Sputnik 1 was launched, that was the event that led to the foundation of NASA. NASA helps us know about space exploration and can caution us from any harm of outerspace.
1st%20us%20man%20to%20orbit_small_square 1st Man to Orbit the Earth The first man to orbit Earth was a Russian named Yuri. Yuri was the first human being who sucessfully went into space and actually went around one of Earth's orbits. Yuri recived many awards and honors for this. Without this event, who knows until when somebody would've been brave enough to go up into space.
1st%20us%20man%20in%20space--_small_square 1st U.S. Man in Space Alan Shepard was the second person in space. This means that someone Russian was the 1st person in space but this puts the U.S. behind Russiain the Space Race compition.
1st%20us%20man%20to%20orbit%20earth_small_square 1st U.S. Man to Orbit Earth The first U.S. man to orbit Earth was John Glenn. He was the the first American to orbit the Earth, fifth person inspace, and third American in space. By doing this, he helped the U.S. during the Sapce Race.
1st%20woman%20in%20space_small_square 1st Woman in Space The first woman in space was a russian woman who's name was Valentina Tereshkova. Valentina's mission was to record what happened and what could happen to a female's body in a 3-day time period in outerspace. She did something important because without her women now wouldn't be able to go into outerspace so easily because they wouldn't have had known what were the consiqueneces of going out there.
1st%20space%20walk_small_square 1st Space Walk Alexy Leonov, who was Russian, walked and went outside the spaceship mfor 12 minutes and 9 seconds on the Vostok 11 mission. Without Alexy we might've not known that there wasn't any gravity in space or that we could actually go into outerspace.
1st%20us%20space%20walk_small_square 1st U.S. Space Walk During the Gemini 4 launch to oouterspace, Ed White went onboard and went outside of the rocket/spaceship for 23 minutes on an 8-meter long cord that he was attached to. Without Ed doing this, the U.S. would've never known that it was possible to "walk" in space and made the discovery years later.
Gemini%207_small_square Gemini 7 The Gemini 7 was the 4th Gemini flight, the 12th American flight and the 20th spaceflight ever. The Gemini7's crew was only as big as 2 people. It lasted in space for aproxemently 14 days but actually 13 2/3 of a day. This spaceflight was important because it helped learn more about space and Earth's orbiit.
Apollo%208_small_square Apollo 8 Apollo 8 was the second mission in the American Apollo space program, was the first spaceflight to leave Earth's orbit. It was captured by the gravitational field of another planet. This was an important part of the Space Race because no other spaceflight had ever left the Earth's orbit.
1st%20us%20man%20on%20the%20moon_small_square 1st Man on the Moon On Neil Armstong's second mission to space he landed on the moon with his partner who's name was Buzz Aldrin. The 1st man on the moon (Neil) created an advance in space astronomy and a world record.
