23-artc3adculo-sputnik-1_tiny 10/04/1957 Launching of Sputnik I Sputnik was a satelilite launched by the soviet union that was the size of a beach ball. It weighed only 183.9 lbs. and it orbited the earth in about 98 minutes on its olipitical path. This even marked the beginning of the Space Race.
Laika-sputnik-2_tiny 11/03/1957 Launching of Sputnik II Sputnik II carried a dog named Laika in it up into space. Laika was a dog that was collected off the streets of Moscow. Laika died in the space craft from stress and overheating. They used the dog test how a living thing would be in space.
Sputnik-3__1_tiny 05/15/1958 Sputnik III Sputnik III was a research satelite to explor the upper atmosphere and near space. Sputnik 3 was conically shaped and weighed 1,327 kilograms and was 3.57 m long.
Mariner02_tiny 01/02/1959 Luna I is launched First man made object to orbit the sun. It was 113,000 km. from Earth. A large cloud of sofium was released from Luna I so astronomers could track the space probe.

Luna_2_tiny 09/12/1959 Luna II is launched The second of the soviet unions Luna program spacecraft. It was the first to actually land on the surface of the moon. This was a big acomplishment for the soviet union.

John_glenn_mercury_(small)_tiny 02/20/1962 John Glenn orbits the Earth three times NASA formed this mission to put a man in space and see what there reactions are to it then return him home safely.
220px-apollo1-edwhite_tiny 06/03/1965 Ed White performs America's first spacewalk. He was the first american to do the spacewalk. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal for his Gemini 4 spaceflight and was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

Moon_tiny 07/20/1969 Neil Armstrong lands on the moon Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, make the first manned soft landing on the Moon, and the first moonwalk ever, using Apollo 11.
Lunokhod_1_tiny 11/17/1970 Luna 17 Luna 17 lands on the moon, with the first automatic robot, Lunokhod 1. Driven by a five-man team on to earth, traveled over surface for 11 days.
Venera7_tiny 12/15/1970 Venera 7 Soviet Venera 7 is the first probe to soft-land on Venus, transmitting for around 23 whole minutes.
Apollo17 (1)_tiny 12/19/1972 Apollo 17 Apollo 17 was the last Apollo mission to land men on the Moon. It carried the only very trained geologist to walk on the lunar surface, lunar module pilot was Harrison Schmitt.
