Unknown-3_tiny 05/01/1882 The Triple Alliance is formed The Triple Alliance was formed in May of 1882. It first consisted of Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. They would enter the war in alliance.
Elt200802240600386529430_tiny 08/31/1907 The Triple Entente is formed This was the alliance formed between Britain, France, and Russia. They entered the war as the allies against Germany and Austria-Hungary.
Images-1_tiny 10/06/1908 Austria-Hungary takes control of Bosnia This time for Bosnians was known as the Bosnian crisis. In 1908, Austria-Hungary announced the annexation of Bosnia.
Unknown-1_tiny 06/28/1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated in Sarajevo The Archduke and his wife took a trip to Serbia in his attempt to most likely try to smooth things over with the people there. There was one attempt to kill him with an explosive while he was riding in his car, which injured a body guard. He was on his way to visit the body guard at the hospital when him and his wife were shot.
Images-3_tiny 07/28/1914 Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia This is what started the first World War. The reason that Austria-Hungary declared war was because the Serbians had assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the throne) and his wife when they visited the city of Saravejo.
Unknown-4_tiny 08/14/1914 Germany Invaded Belgium Germany decided to invade Belgium, and it was part of their plan to go through Belgium to get to the French forces. Belgium wanted to stay neutral, but German forces set foot in Belgium, which caused Britain (allies of Belgium) to declare war on Germany.
Unknown-2_tiny 05/07/1915 A German U-boat Sinks the Lusitania The Lusitania primarily was used as a ferry to take people between the United States and Great Britain. World War I had begun and sea travel was dangerous. German U-Boats often stalked the British waters, and ended up sinking the Lusitania with some torpedos.
Images_tiny 07/01/1916 The First Battle of the Somme begins The battle consisted of an offense by the British and French forces against German forces. It was one of the bloodiest battles ever. No one really came out on top in this battle.
Unknown-5_tiny 03/01/1917 The Zimmerman Note is discovered The Zimmerman Note was a proposal from the German forces to the Mexican forces around March in 1917 to declare war on the United States. The telegram was intercepted by the British and de-coded before it reached Mexico.
Images-2_tiny 04/06/1917 The United States Declares War on Germany German U-Boats continued to attack passenger boats with U.S. citizens on board. The attack of the Lusitania seemed to be one of the last straws.
