04/12/1861 12 Apr 1861, Civil War begins and first nursing shortage in America is recognized. Kim 1/7/12 There were no professional nurses available before the Civil War. As the War produced wounded and dying soldiers, many ordinary women as well as religious sisters rose to take the roles of nurses. But they were hardly enough in nurmbers. Therefore the first nursing shortage in America was recognized.

My scope of practice is governed under and influenced by NPA in the state of Georgia. 01/01/1917 National Committee on Nursing formed to take charge in supplying nurses to US Army Hospitals. Kim, 1/7/12 National Committee on Nursing was formed and charged with supplying an adequate number of trained nurses to US Army hospitals abroad during WW I and to deal with the Flu Epidemic within the country.
09/06/1920 Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, PhD, RN, FAAN is born Wilcox 1/17/2012. Dr. Murillo-Rohde was the first First Latina and Founder of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. She got her Masters from NY's Columbia University and her Masters and Doctorate from NY University. She was committed to assist ing Latinas in securing their education to provide service to their community and in helping themselves.

10/01/1926 Connecticut State Nurses' Association (CSNA) was established Barry-In October of 1926, a State Headquarters was established combining three state nursing associations, GNA, the State League of Nursing Education, and the State Organization for Public Health Nursing, under one roof as the Connecticut State Nurses' Association (CSNA).
01/01/1932 Loan and Emergency Fund created by CSNA for unemployed nurses During the depression of the 1930s the CSNA offered its support and help to nurses in Connecticut. They created a Loan and Emergency Fund in 1932 which was used to help those unemployed nurses needing assistance. They also adopted a group disability plan for its members.

11/21/1986 WHO Conference on Health Promotion The World Health Organization holds it's 1st International (in subsequent meetings "Global") Conference on Health Promotion, in Ottawa, Canada,resulting in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. 01/01/1987 NNRA(National Nursing Research Agenda) was launched. Kim 1/30/12 NINR has been limited in budget that supports nursing researches aimed at establishing a scientific bases for nursing practices. Hence, NNRA was launced in order to estabblish priorities for research funding.
01/01/1989 Texas Nurse Practitioner Program founded (Ross 2/3/12) Advancements made in higher education when the first nurse practitioner program was founded in 1989. This advancement in broadening the nurses scope of practice has greatly impacted my decision of pursuing a higher nursing degree.
01/01/1990 Mansfield Training school closes 1/7/12-C-Barry Mansfield Traing starts the process of closing the facility and moving all it's clients to group homes.
01/01/1991 Internation Center for HIV/AIDS Research and Clinical Training in Nursing was founded. Kim 2/14/12 The Center focuses on nursing care for people at risk for and infected with HIV across all health care and community settings. The mission of the Center is to enhance optimal health and quality of care for people living with, at risk for and affected by HIV/AIDS through nursing leadership in research, clinical practice and education. The Center is affiliated with the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centers, and is a component of the UCSF AIDS Research Institute.

01/01/1998 WHO posted first federal guidelines concerning the increasing obesity rates occuring worldwide (Ross 2/19/12) WHO posted "Clinical guidelines on identifying, evaluating, and treating obesity in adults". In the US alone from 1971-2000 obesity rates rose from 14.5% to 30.9%.
01/01/2000 Healthy People 2010 (Ross 1/228/12) US Dept. Health &Human Services implemented a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan. Impacted nurses by focusing on education geared toward wellness. Goals to increase quality and years of life while eliminating health disparities.
01/01/2001 19 major nursing organizations coming together at the Nursing Profession Summit. Kim 1/23 The steering committee at the Nursing Profession Summit identified 10 domains that described the work needed to accomplish the vision they set forth in a document titled "Nursing's Agenda for the Future". 09/01/2003 Texas Nursing Practice Act Amendment (Ross 1/14/12) Texas is the state I have practiced as an LVN and a RN. The Texas Nursing Practice Act is found within the Texas Occupation Code. Statutory changes can only be made every two years when the Texas Legislature convenes for 140 days and at this time changes can be enacted by legislature. In Texas LVNs and Rns were governed by two separate Boards of Nursing. September 2003 HB 1483 amended the Texas Nursing Act and combined these two jurisdictions under one Board of Nursing.

06/09/2009 RN first US healthcare worker to die of H1N1 Karen Ann Hays, RN, becomes first US healthcare worker to die from complications of H1N1 virus. The infection was complicated by a concurrent MRSA pneumonia, a rare and very lethal combination of pathogens. Both the hospital at which the nurse worked and Cal OSHA are criticized for their handling of the case.
03/23/2010 PPACA is signed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed by President Barack Obama. Medicare, private and public health insurance are reformed and access to healthcare for 30 million Americans is opened. Whatever you might think about it, our practice as nurses is being changed forever by this legislation or other legislation that will come about as this legislation is revised.
